Need a 4 wheel brake job - I think the front rotors (original GMH ones) need machining - so may be better to put that dollars towards better rotors - at least on the front ?

It's only a family car - VTII Berlina wagon with 74000K on clock, so don't want anything high performance - just good quality rotors that might improve breaking performance. Also, don't really want to pay a fortune on special pads to go with improved rotors either.

    Any recommendations ? Brand ? Model ? Type ?

    Thanx

Just get them machined. There are mobile guys that can do them for you if you are going to do the brake pads yourself.

You might as well get all 4 rotors machined and new pads.

Otherwise you are looking at MIN. $500 -$600+ for new slotted rotors and preformance pads....

How much do you want to spend ( Pads and Rotors ) ?

Quoted about $450 for 4 wheel reline and front rotors machined - providing there is sufficient thickness to allow machining of course. If not, then I'll get new rotors on front only.

Having only done 74,000 kms the rotors shouldn't be too worn. I've only just replaced mine after 250,000 kms

I recently machined my rotors and replaced pads at 80,000kms,the rotors still had plenty of thickness after machining.

With your budget you could probably upgraded to slotted rotors and preformance pads as long as you do the labour yourself...

If you can,t, i would get a couple more quotes and get all 4 rotors machined.

ok - thanks. You are probably right. Was thinking of getting some cheaper drilled rotors off eBay but the brake place wern't too keen on fitting anything they didn't usually sell.

    My car's hit around 125,000km's...

I last changed all four pads at 60,000km's, and the rotors were just about perfect so they didn't need machining. This time they do though. :(

So all up - I soon need new pads, cleaned up rotors and a fluid change. $$$ :(

What's the best option? I've seen on Ebay you can buy standard rear Holden rotors for $50, and the fronts for $65.... would it be better value to buy these, rather than have all the discs machined? From memory, Holden quoted $99 to machine the rotors - that was a few years back though.

Do the brake specialist places do it cheaper than that?

i just looked on my servicing invoices, and each time i've had the pads changed (which has been twice) both times for rotor machining it was $15/rotor...

i'm still using the factory rotors, they've done well considering my driving style :D

Because it is cheaper sometimes to buy through a company of people you know, it is also easier to drive your car in and drive it out without getting dirty :)

I had a look at gettin those rotors on ebay tho by the time i got them shipped over 2 me it was almost just worth buyin them direct from a seller i got all 4 rotors + 4 new pads fitted (transgold they were called) 4 $530 plus got 2 front rotors machined and cleaned down for $50 inc in that price i thought that was pretty good deal. Tho if u wanna save money and if ur rotors have plenty of meat on em id just get them re machined i only replaced mine coz i got new mags and the old rotors had surface rust all over them and they looked **** house the way they were n while i was at it i painted my rotors 2 came up shmick ay ;)

Ne 1 had a problem with slotted rotors bein noisey under breaking??? i would of got those but hearing that put me off 4 the price they already r 2 buy ay.

    Did you ever consider that....

Some people might not have the resources to be able to do this ie. mechanical ability or tools....

I live around 10 mins drive from Sunbury, and there's a Sunbury-based brake & clutch dealer on Ebay. :) So I'm easily able to head over a pick anything up I win for free. :) Which is why I was looking at that, rather than machining them... (I'm also after some front struts).

If it's only $15 to machine them though, that'll be cheaper. :)

I'd do it myself but I don't think I have the equipment... I only have a monkey wrench! :)

Actually I have to get my brake fluid changed, and that's something I don't want to do myself - don't want to get it wrong!
