    Howdy all,

Been a veerryyyy long time since my last post! Sorta been preoccupied with full time employment and just left the car on the backburner, she's been running well! Anyways, upon recent completion of my last 10,000km service it was made to my attention that the Inlet Manifold/gasket is rat****. Now the fella didn't say directly that the whole Inlet Manifold is gone or just the gasket so i'm a bit confused as to what to get a quote for because he provided a figure of between $300-400.

Symptoms that could contribute to one of these things failing as follows:
-Disappearing coolant without a leak anywhere.
-Car starts harshly, cranks once over then starts sharply and sometimes have a puff of black smoke (burnt fuel) out of the exhaust.
-Lack of power on hard acceleration.
-Not great fuel economy (14.5 -16L per 100kms).

(Spark plug leads and fuel filter were replaced at service because they were also stuffed, WILL NEVER GO TOP GUN LEADS AGAIN! Got the NGK in there now, much more pleased with the acceleration but still believe the above named issues have yet to be resolved)

    Cheers all,
    Boojakz

have a look around the inlet manifold, the gaskets on the vs's were always an issue. Mechanics charge a couple of hundred for replacement.

Easy enough to do yourself if you have a bit of time and patients, no special tools required. Just need a gregorys for some instruction and a big area to put all the bits as you pull them out of the way. Cant remember the exact costs of the gaskets, something like $70. I would pull it apart and have a look. Might be obvious that its the gasket and you have solved the problem, or you might find that the manifold itself needs replacement once you have a look, in which case its off to the wreckers.

Id fit these aluminium inlet manifold gaskets from mace. They dont crack like the original plastic ones and cost around the same price. The next time mine go,I will be using these.I found them a few weeks ago.I did my gaskets a couple of years ago on my VS.I just used the plastic type ones again though.Wish Id known about these back then.HOLDEN INLET MANIFOLD GASKETS TO SUIT V6 & L67 ENGINES - eBay Manifold Gaskets, Gaskets, Car, Truck Parts, Cars, Bikes, Boats. I never knew that the inlet manifold gasket was responsible for poor fuel consumption, but it explains why I am chewing it and using water with no leaks.

coolant in combustion wont help fuel consumption

in the last month i have been wondering the same thing. Little bit of a bad idel when sitting at the lights, around 50 to 60 less km's poor start up and the losing water after replacing the radiator and thermostate. Cant wait to install the gaskets this weekend i will post the out come.

changed the inlet manifold gaskets today was a bit of a job as i wanted to clean everthing and make sure it was perfect. Car is so far running perfect with no leaks and great pick up in acceleration aswell. If i could give anyone a tip in doing this job it would be dont just change the gaskets if you car has done 250k plus then it will need a clean for sure so allow a couple more hours to do the job 100%. All up took me 4hrs to do the job today.

long time since any posts good to go an extra 20 - 30 minutes and do the throttle body and clean or replace air filter makes a tonne of difference to initial acceleration did this to my mates vs driving like **** for months made a BIG difference

Help with Inlet Manifold Gasket Leaks

I think you guys just diagnosed my unhealthy commodore for me! been a while since anyone has posted on this but i'm not wanting to send my car back to a mechanic as he is ripping me off. can someone give me good instructions or a good website so I don't stuff it up? It's a 99 Series 11 VT i've noticed Miss Stacey did it so I'm going to try to fix myself. $6000 in repairs in 2011 and I'm hoping a leaking Inlet manifold gasket is the answer here...

What causes this to happen? I've had everything else replaced on my car and the Mechanic has never even suggested this as an option. Basically for the past year my car has run like a bag of crap, it's a gorgeous car just so costly! she has hardly any power especially on the incline and tends to jump back into a gear. When caught in stop, start traffic it sounds like she's choking? diffently a misfire perhaps? the car drives fine through the motion but as soon as you back off the car cracks it rumbles and cuts out? not caring whether it be at a traffic light or a damn roundabout! I really don't want to sell her as she's too nice a car!

Is there certain precautions I may need to take with the car as it's now done 250kms? Any help would be greatly appreciated guys!
