installing timing chain

We are building up a 308, and when we put the new cam in we didn't think to mark where the timing was or anything so we could put the cam gear back on in the right spot.

Wat do ya do to get the cam and crank gears in the correct spot to put the chain on. The cam gear has a dot embossed on it, but the crank didn't have one. Using a Rollermaster set.

We measured up the distance from keyway to keyway on the 253 and set it the same on the 308 and put the gears on.....but something just doesn't seem right about that?

get number 1 piston on top dead, the dot on the crank gear should be on the oil pump side of the block. then turn the cam gear round to the oil pump side of the block and make sure theres 9 links between the dots

or the gold links on the chain lining up with the dots on the oil pump side of the block

Well it's all in and ready to start, it's got oil pressure, but was to late to start it....will give it a shot this morning, and if it's all good we'll take it out the track this arvo for a squirt.
