And that’s why they need to be configured to suit the features and specs of the car they are going into.

Can the issue with the reverse fuel meter be resolved with the re-configuration of the cluster or does the fuel sensor need to be changed?

When I converted the vu to a vy wiring harness the fuel gauge was originally backwards . I de pinned the fuel sender plug and swapped the wires around.

I wish it was that simple, no matter which way you put the wires its the same. A resistor is a resistor no matter the polarity.

Fair enough no idea how it made my fuel gauge work correctly then.

It is that simple. Using the correct software or using a Tech2, the cluster is configured to suit the vehicle. This can include custom graphics on start up and matching km.

Yes, that is correct. You need a tech2 or software.
I haven’t been able to change the series II cluster for a series I fuel sensor. Mine still reads in reverse. Changed the resistance values in the cluster so the low resistance shows the tank is full and still shows in reverse.
Here is a dump:-

ALDL Mode: 0x1 (read configuration table) Table: 0x6

Sender 45 ohms = 75.0L
Sender 50 ohms = 68.0L
Sender 66 ohms = 63.0L
Sender 87 ohms = 57.0L
Sender 101 ohms = 48.0L
Sender 128 ohms = 36.0L
Sender 174 ohms = 28.0L
Sender 200 ohms = 15.0L
Sender 222 ohms = 6.0L
Sender 240 ohms = 2.0L
Tank size 75.0 L
Low petrol warn 8 L
Very Low petrol warn 2 L
