i think you're in for a rude shock once you're off your l's mate.

No way will you be paying that with all those mod's listed for a P plater.

And if you are, give me their phone number!!

    yeah thats my understanding.
Mod's (assuming you can substantiate ownership) will get you 0-10% of the Mod's value in terms of increased payout from the insurer.

They just don't see them as increasing the value of the car because someone (anyone) you try and sell it too may say 'oh but i dont want 18 inch wheels' or 'i hate music what am i going to do with a $1500 stereo'

    so thats their rationale

things like good quality suspension for $1000, might get you an extra $1-200 if u can substantiate ownership as i say.

    But is it so?

I note the comments on options and value in a car, in particular the comment that they don't increase value.

From an insurance company point of view, I agree. That is why I would only have agreed value for an optioned car. Once I did not like their "valuation", and queried it. They then added 50% of the value of the modifications to the agreed value. That was a long time ago, and I have not had reason to be concerned since.

With regard to "valuers", I have had car dealer valuers quote that options don't increase the value. I have also had them quote that manual's are worth $1,000 less than equivalent auto's.

However, I have a friend who was the valuer for a large dealer. He told me this was just salesmanship. His advice for Commodores or Falcons was, "Buy a manual for $1,000 less, use 15% less fuel for the life of the car, and sell it for $1,000 more".

I have found this to be true again and again. Forget what the valuer tells you. Look at the prices charged by the dealers.

When I bought my VS S2, I was thinking of getting an-ex governemnt car from the auctions. At the time, auto Executives with around 40,000 Km were going for less $20,000, and Acclaims for around $22,000. A couple of executives with Acclaim type options and 50,000+ Km turned up, and sold at the auction for $25,000.

Used values are supply and demand. How many manuals do you see changed to autos? 5% of new Commodores are manuals, but the used car markey probably prefers them about 25% of the time. Hence supply and demand for manuals is up and for autos is down. IMHO, backed by experience.

MY VS berlina 1995 SI in near to perfect condition with 124k kays on the clock.

3500 stereo, 1500 rims, 500 exhaust and engine work, car cost me 5500, spent a bit on it, insured for 12,000... Full comprehensive Insurance costs me 775 per year with a 700 excess (400 under 25, 300 regular excess). This is not bad in my opinion, but tell me if im getting ripped off, as Im only 19, and am a bit naive to this stuff...

Insured with AAMI by the way

I am sole owner/driver. All my dad did was ring them up!!! He has held a policy with them since they started insuring people, so he is what you could call a "good customer"...

I think they did him some sort of deal, seen as he has NEVER made a claim on any insurance policy he has held EVER!!!

Thats what we call a "perfect" driving record...

I just checked on RACV and AAMI, for the stock VTII Calais I wanna get in December... with $1500 sterio with a purchase price of around $19000.
RACV will cost $2498 a year with my 59 year old mother as Owner/Main driver and me as the other driver. (when I turn 18 in 5 weeks). Or just $700 for my mother only. Insured for $20,000.
AAMI will cost $670 a year for my mother and will not cover me at all.
    Value of $21,000.
Tell me, how can I get around this? $20,000 car, $200 car- it don't seem to matter, they still charge me around $2500 a year with double the excess of any other full licenced person.

I am insured through Shannons, and before i get into any details, i must say these guys **** all over any other insurance car that won't even give me the time of day. Well done Shannons for letting the drivers have awesome cars.

    I pay $2050 a year, $1000 excess (im 20), insured for $16000-
    On a VS Acclaim 96 3.8 V6
    $10000+ of mods

Just car were the only other ones to even give a quote, they wouldnt insure the wheels and stereo... not the impression i got from their TV ad!!
But seriosuly shannons were awesome, a young guy came out and looked at my car, knew all the ins and outs of Holdens, he was gettting exctited jjst talking about cars it was great!!!

Im with AAMI, and i was wondering if i insured my car as a stock vehicle and then decided to get it lowered....and i put it on the insurance claim would they still insure me? some ppl dont think they would.

  20. My girlfriend's got a VS series 2 Acclaim with 16x7 VR Clubby mags, sports exhaust, lowered springs, tinted windows and up here in North Queensland she pays $1300 per annum through RACQ. She bought the car for $8500 and has it insured full comprehensive at market value.

RACQ are the only ones who will touch her for insurance, (she lost her license for speeding and is only 19). Currently on a rating 6 driving a modded car this price seems fair to me. I shopped around and with her record the closest price I could find to insure her car was $1900! Shannons car insurance is the biggest rip!!!
