Yeah I have heard of this before. Insurance companies will do everything in their power to make sure you get the least amount or no payout unless the cost of doing so is greater than the benefits they receive.

Comprehensive insurance for my 2000 VX V6 is over $1600. I'm not even going to bother with it. Just settled for Third Party Fire and Theft for around $400.

Im with Bingle, I didnt do a great amount of research but I did a little, I also spoke to a family lawer and she said that Bingle's PDF seems legit and up to date ect.. Obviously not as much cover as NRMA but for my 2002 VX V6 I'm covered for $6,200, $80p/month, $1,500 for at fault claims for under 25's, $500-$800 for over 25's ect.. I dont recommend Bingle if you have the money to go with NRMA or a big name insurance company but for the price Bingle offers they cover the basics.

Sounds like OP paid per month so it's normal to deduct the remaining balance

As for rego, should get it back from the Vic roads once paperwork sent to OP that car is a writeoff

That's what happened to me in NSW anyway under aami.

Sounds normal to me

Ring Vic Roads and cancel the rego asp IE Monday morning!

When you get your letter saying the vehicle is a write off:
Write a letter to Vic Roads with the rego, your license number, address etc
and ask for a refund, enclose the letter re the write off and send it in.
The insurance company does not do it immediately and you get in first.
I have done it twice and both times successfully and the insurance
company will not get a cent of the refund.
Also I have found Vic Roads to be very helpful over the phone as
well as writing to them. They only need your cancellation and the
letter that states it is a write off.
Don't forget to photo copy the pages you send in.

If you don't understand PM me as you are talking about many hundreds of dollars.

cheers Andrew.

That's what happened to me when my 2000 VX Calais was written off - had an agreed value of $8k, then had the remaining year's worth of premium deducted.

Rego was a separate issue with SA Motor Reg.. once I had the total loss paperwork just took that in with the plates and got a refund on the remaining rego.

GIO PDS said:
Deductions from your total loss claim
When we pay you for a total loss claim we will deduct:
- and excess or unpaid premium including any unpaid instalments in the period of insurance if you pay your premium monthly;
- any unused registration and compulsory third party (CTP) insurance that you are entitled to if your vehicle is registered in NSW. You can obtain these refunds from the NSW RTA.

This suggests they can only take the rego if your car is registered in NSW.

If not, ring Vicroads and cancel your rego. Get refund.

Having said that, read your PDS to ensure you are not insured under a different PDS
