Hi guys, I know it's probably been covered before but I was wondering if there would be any chance of salvaging an irs lsd that's buggered? And if so how expensive would it be parts wise?

Depends on how buggered it is.

Sometimes you can machine the face of the cones so they don't bottom out and then shim shim up the spider gears and replace the pre-load spring and they are good to go. Other times the cones are too shagged and need replacement.

you'd be looking at anything from a couple hundred dollars to over a thousand depending on the work required.

What model is this for (you're in the VR/VS section but show VY in "my ride") as there are differences between the early and late model IRS centres.

If you check back now you'll see I've just updated my garage to include the vs immortality The VY was simple coz there's heaps of those diffs around, cost is my main issue as I can buy an open diff and mini spool it for around $250 but I'm not sure if the missus would appreciate that much The diff has done a lot of 'work' and is 300000 or so km's old, and I've got nowhere to jack up the car and leave if with the diff out to check it internally (bloody ford in the garage)

Are there not many good LSD diffs for the VS around? I get my LSD diffs for around $400 NZD for a 3.08 and run them until they break, although I haven't broken one yet.

Are the diff housings not the same between VS and VT-VZ?

Could the OP not get a VT - VZ diff and knock the flange off and rreplace it with the VS one? A serious question as I don't know!

Yeah, you can swap the later model diffs into the VP-VS, however if you get anything from VX onwards you will need to cut the extra bit of the end of the pinion that supports the doughnut on the later type driveshaft. The question will always be what sort of condition any 2nd hand LSD is or how long it will last. The LSD in our VX Calais (L67) was totally shot by 160,000kms.

The earlier M75/76/78 LSD's are easier to rebuilt than the M80 LSD.

Swapping flanges did cross my mind but I wasn't sure due to that extra spigot bit on the end, at least I've got a few more options now, thanks for all the info

On the condition thing when I get mine I have always opened them up and had a look for obvious wear etc, I may also have been quite lucky, fortunately kiwis are **** drivers so plenty of HSV's get written off for us to get parts from :p
