So for a while now my laptop has done this on startup:

Dont really know how the problem came around, but its been like it for ages. Its a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ27G. Havnt been botherered to have it looked at by a shop just wanted to get some opinons first.

Was thinking graphics card but some of the keys wont do anything when I press them. For example if a press the 'R' key it wont register. So I cant actually log in.

Any suggestions welcome. Cheers

have you updated the graphics card driver recently? if so this could be the cause.
Another thing to check is the connector that goes from the screen to the motherboard but that requires some disassembly. I have seen similar issues when the plug is not seated correctly.

Maybe RAM? Especially if you have integrated graphics. Also - have you tried connecting an external display?

Nah I havnt even tried to turn it on in over 6 months.. I might try taking it apart. I dont want to bite off more than I can chew tho.
Is it easy to see if its conencted or not?

Last thing to try is format it and do a clean instal of windows, porn sites sometimes download viruses and the fact the "R" key isn't working might have a meaning....but back up everything you need to a disk or hard drive

Have you tried plugging in a usb keyboard? maybe worth a try to see if its the keyboard built into the notebook or something else.

RE: the screen, It could be the ribbon cable that goes to the monitor from the board, these can be damaged quite easily.

Does it do the wierd screen thing when booting (bios and windows startup screens)?

As previously mentioned try to get access to an external monitor and hook it up, this will determine if the graphics card has failed or if its something else.

Formatting should be last resort, honestly it will more than likely make no difference.......

Either the ribbon's shot connecting the screen, or the gfx card is rooted. Also try finding a bios update from someone elses computer, put it on a usb, and open your boot menu if you can on start up, and set to run from a flash disk so your bios updates. I had to do that after installing more ram to my laptop

Tried plugging in a external monitor? that would narrow that down pretty quickly.
