Way too thick. Go for a 20W-50.

Wow, wayyy too think unless its leaking like a trooper and its blowing smoke and knocking like an old lady in a downstairs appartment no way. Even 15w-40 is fine or even 10w-30

    YES that's too thick

i use penrite 15W60 in my vx with @ 228xxx and have been since @ 200xxx and i'm very happy with it, super quite with no start up noise

change it every 5K to 6K

Man, even 25w50 or 15w60 is too thick IMO.

My engines done roughly 300,000 and I use 5W30 or 10w30 snth.
    Their not 1980's engines.
I don't get any cold start noises either, BUT YOU MUST USE GENUINE GM OIL FILTER. Not ryco or any other generic after market filters. Can't remember which MAG it was , but they did independant testing on all the A/M brands and genuine filters from the different car manuf. ALL A/M brands came up as being poorly made with too much cartridge jammed in the filter cannister. They showed pics of the different filter cut through to reveal the quality of each. Genuines were made to fit. Difference which was my own first hand change from A/M to a genuine filter was MASSIVE. Cold starts and lifter noise was gone as soon as I put the genuine filter on (Had just done the oil change and used Castrol Edge 5W30 then read about it so with same oil changed the filter to genuine) . You run a big risk of bearing dammage and even conrod through the block if you get a bad filter from an A/M brand.
You will also notice a considerable power and response improvement with 5W30 as the oil pump isn't under and as much of a strain.
BUT sure if you engine has oil leaks and blows smoke THEN go thicker. But not just for the sake of how many K's on the clock.

Just read your last post about the DEALERS oil. I wouldn't trust a DEALERS OIL EVER. They will put in what makes them the biggest profit margine.
I had a Hyundai Elantra from new ONCE!!!. The dealer had a WE RECOMEND SHELL HELIX 25W50 STICKER in the engine bay.
First oil change and the car was already suffering major carbon buid up in the oil system. I dumped the oil and went to the 5W30. Instant fix for the flat spot it had in the rev range and had even power and more power right through, plus better economy.

The design of the V6 engine is over 30 years old, and a lot of these newer oils on the market are made for use in newer multi valve or multi overhead cam engines, not old pushrod OHV engines, which is why some of these oils have a lower last number in their rating.
Check the vehicle manufacturers recommended oil specs and stick with them, or if you want, use an oil that exceeds these recommended specs. The recommended oil for use in the VR/VS V6 is 20W-50 (SG or SH), or 15W-40 (SG or SH) in snowy areas. I use mobil 1 5W-50 full synthetic oil, as my engine gets a very hard time a lot of the time, so I like to use the best in it. My ecotec has over 200,000 km on it now..

I use 10w40 Valvoline, car's done 430,000km I change oil and filter every 5,000km and it runs and sounds great I'd be concerned about the knocking noise but perhaps that will disappear once you put real oil in it. As far as filters go,I've always used Repco filters (GMH approved) but I'd be really interested to read the article mentioned by Customcreations cos if genuine really are better I'll be doing the switch next time for sure.

Do you hate your car? Why would you want to lubricate it with molasses?

As the other guys have said, 200k is nothing to an Ecotec that has been cared for. Go with the recommendations for your engine, keep it changed regularly, together with the filter, and it will outlast the rest of the car.

Is there a reason you want thicker oil? Mines done 170, still using 5w-30, doesn't use any oil

I use 10w 40 in my vs and got 482 thousand on it. All original and purs like a kitten. I wouldn't go any different. Your motor still brand new in my book.

No mostly China now. There may be a few still made there but too many faults coming out of South Africa.

Just because something may be made in China, does not mean the quality of the product has deteriorated.
