It can happen, nothing is set forever. Going back in history we can see nations loose or gain territories, or split and create new ones. The USSR broke in the late 80s, Yugoslavia after the break of the Soviet Union, Germany splitted and reunited, Korea might merge as one again.

There are talks, rumors, suggestions on breaking some states.

Who knows but tensions are rising. No predictions at this time but there is an internal war among Gov agencies, specially the intel ones, even the Armed Forces are divided. Some want more of the same, others are pro change.

Reminds me of the movie "The Last Chase" (1981). A viral pandemic, all sports cancelled, banned all combustion cars, the USA splited.
