It still happens. Further, go check out citylink, east link and the peninsula freeway - all private roads with the road surface and surrounding areas all maintained in tip top shape, far better than any private road.

Eh??? All of the above are regulated. Ownership has nothing to do with it. Chances are, standards are potentially higher as there is not the conflict of interest with govco regulating itself. Further, I don't see how public ownership will cut down contractor costs and the like. Govco has a long and celebrated history of being smashed between the eyes when it comes to outsourcing labour!

I disagree... privatisation in Victoria has meant much higher prices (despite the original promises to Kennett) and far worse service
( i made my 5th phone call today to AGL to try and fix an invoice that does not add up ..and has a $2000 CREDIT figure for GST on $4000 usage)

because everyone forgets that private enterprise (especially those on the ASX) live or die by how much they can squeeze out of the market they are in
.. profit is the holy grail and MORE profit is a BIGGER Holy Grail and if they have to obsfucate to regulators or governments, they will.

The regs in Victoria (or other states) are a joke and they only serve to rape the poor suckers who cannot pick up a phone and move providers
(and laughing all the way to their next bonus are the power providers because 45% of customers have not bothered to seek rates less
than the regulated ones) But then WHY SHOULD THEY? The promise was cheaper power... gas water if the industry was handed over to
industry and it just ain't happened.

And finally I am of the opinion there would be 171 now deceased Victorians still walking around if privatisation of electricity had NOT happened in Victoria.
The old SEC would never have allowed power lines and connectors to miss maintenance... which we all know was the cause of those bushfires.

    Corporatism, got to love it.

As usual, greed is the root cause of all. There is not a cure for that.

Here on our neck of the woods, Corporations drives the politicians like a pack of mules with a carrot called Campaign Contribution Money and write law to favor their business models. Politics is just plain and simple salesmanship for the masses at its best.

We are even privatizing and/or outsourcing the military with contractors. Anybody that pulled a tour in the Middle East can vouch for that.

The nations are playing Tongo with the world, if you catch my drift.

    "Chief Justice Tim Carmody resigns

After 11 months of controversy, Tim Carmody finally silenced his critics by tendering his resignation as the state's Chief Justice".

Regardless of who you support in this issue it will be good for it to be over and for Queensland to move on!

Its a shame. Despite some of his short comings, he was someone who wanted to drive change based on his years with the Police. However, as with the legal field, they are so stuck in their ways and refuse to reform. A lot of the head Barristers in Queensland (where its a major boys club and if you arent in the club you will be shunned) have serious grudges against him and had some serious jealousy issues due to his fast rise to Cheif Justice especially after being a copper.

With that being said, the separation of powers were on a very thin line with his appointment. He was too close to the Government IMO to be appointed.

Its good he is allowed to go back to being a Supreme Court Judge and from what Ive read, hes made some conditional terms of reform to the court system up there in exchange for his resignation.

When I was doing law I had the pleasure of meeting him (right up there with meeting the Honourable Michael Kirby) and he was actually one of the reasons I started to question why I was doing law in the first place.

I'm not sure how you (or anybody) can say prices are higher or cheaper under privatisation compared to what they would have been with private ownership. Even if prices were lower, that means they would have been subsidised by government and kept artificially low which is paid for via taxes - the public will pay either way.

I've had no end of trouble getting south east water to fix a stolen water meter with water pissing out everywhere for days on end. SE water is government owned so I don't see the difference to your problem.

Yup however tarrifs are legislated and cannot be changed without agreement of the regulator.

As above - its impossible to tell if power prices are higher or lower than they otherwise would be under govco ownership. Anybody who has had anything to do with any level of government will acknowledge that they are nearly always bloated overstaffed gravy trains and thus costs are almost guaranteed to be higher in overheads than an equivalent private enterprise. Soooo lower overheads, some of which gets returned to the consumer and possibly most gets kept by the company via profit thus somewhat of a 'win' all 'round.

Feel free to present some evidence of that claim. Whilst you are free to hold your opinion, I suspect it's not based on any credible supporting evidence.

It's interesting to read claims that privatization has led to higher power prices in Victoria. NSW hasn't privatized yet and our power bills have gone up by over 80% since 2008 under public ownership. That doesn't say much for keeping power supplies under government ownership, does it?

That's because it's an impossible claim to prove either way. How do you say definitively how much it would have cost under the 'other' ownership??? Just the same as 'interest rates will be lower under Liberal than Labor' claim. Impossible to say either way.

Its easy to say prices have increased under privatization. Because, they have.

You cant say that they have gone up anymore or any less than what they would have under publicly owned services because they've been privatized for some time now.

Theres two arguments to it. Under privitisation, theres more of a focus on profits. Which is true. Theyre a business. But id also argue, because there are so many suppliers out there now, there is lots of competition and lots of room for customers to bargain and be presented with deals.

    ya mum!
So Greece... The first case of real world proof the socialist left's ideology of everyone being entitled to something is completely wrong. Sooner or later the debt has to be paid! Running a country's economy by piling debt upon debt upon debt while handing out all the borrowed money to anyone willing to take it does not work! And now look at the mentality... "ahem, we want our money back please", "NO!".

Imagine the reply to this: "Sorry ANZ, I gave all the money you loaned me to people who wouldn't go and earn some money for themselves, so now that my mortgage payment is due we've discussed it and decided we're not going to pay it. And can we please borrow some more money so we can keep handing it out to other people who want to do nothing for it? K, thanks, bye!"

This is pretty much how its gone.

The Greek people love a laid back lifestyle. They have an extremely bloated public service sector. They have an exceptional pension and welfare system because Governments get voted in based on their ability to throw euros around like its monopoly money. Tax evasion is the national sport and because of their tourism industry, everything is cash. So youve got an\ country that feels entitled to money for doing nothing paired with an economy that draws in comparison, little tax. It doesnt take an economist to realise the issue.

Then youve got this new Prime Minister, who thinks saying no is the answer. People are cheering they voted no. Thats great Greece, why are you cheering? Youve just made your bank cards useless because the banks have no access to Euros. Youve made everyone reliant on cash (which noone has). Youve got no end in sight and no plan. Why are you cheering for giving your income source the finger? Youre saying no we wont commit to reforms, but can you give us some more money? Reminds me of all the people here that scream "TAX THE RICH, GREEDY BASTARDS!" Thats great. What do you do when the rich dont want to support you anymore?

Give it a week to see how much cheering there is when people are being beaten to death for a loaf of bread.

It was irresponsible of the banks to keep funding Greece allowing it to get into this position. It was irresponsible of the Greek politicians to keep promising the lifestyle they wanted. It was irresponsible of the Greek people to keep voting these idiots in and not seeing the hard facts.

Greece and the rest of Europe have been screwed Germany and England.

The whole one currency was always going to be flawed as there was no overall political representation .

And the way it was implemented was flawed,
Wages was converted from old currency to Euro at the going rate then everything just went 1 to 1
Good in Germany bad in the rest of Europe.

Then we have England who wants all the benefits of being in the EU but kept it's own currency ,
England your ability to rape other nations knows no bounds.

The countries should have all kept their own currencies and had the EURO as a trading currency.

And of course it failed as the good ol' U S of A was never going to let oil be paid in EUROS .........

all things being equal , the Germans probably owe the Greeks several millions , in reparations after raping and pillaging Greece after WWII , I have heard somewhere that Russia may bail them out that's the last thing the Greeks will want or need , owing the Ivan's .
