- VT Commodore Olympic Wagon 3.8
hey guys,
just changed the intake manifold gaskets on my 3.8ltr V6 ecotech and thought I'd share some pictures. Car has done close to 290.000km and is a 99 VT Series II. Going by the date imprinted on the old gaskets and the state they are in, this might actually be the first time this job was done on this car.
These symptoms were the reasons why I decided to do the job:
- oil sludge in radiator (visible under radiator cap)
- oil leak at the back of the manifold, oil running down the back of the engine
- slight coolant leak through one of the manifold bolts
- engine idles a bit rough (but not bad at all)
As the photos show, it was a good idea to change the gaskets:
I got a Payen gasket set (HA5001) for $129 at Repco. Not cheap, but IMO better quality than the ezyfit set ($75 at supercheap). If you're planning on keeping the car for longer the aluminium gaskets by Mace would be the way to go.
After extensive cleaning:
And finally...engine started 1st time, runs and purrs. No leaks, idles nicely. :spot on:
Might change the oil + filter on the weekend just to be save.
All in all it took me 12 hours (over the long weekend)...big part of it was cleaning though. And I've not done this before.
