well im currantly doing year 12. at the moment ive come upon a tought decision. i want to be a bricky or a carpenter or a concreter. now i love doing them all, but i want to go to tafe next year and i dont no which one to choose so ide like to get sopme feedback from anyone here or mates of mates who are either one of the above money isnt really an issue for me.
i got a mate who works doing concrete fab. he hates it, says its just way to boring and repetitive - not to mention when you start out your bending over constantly spreading out and evening the conrete and it kills your back. id go for carpentry, a couple of friends i went to school with got into carpentry and are doing really well, plus they really enjoy what they do. the first years a bit rough, as your basically just a labourer, but after that it gets better.
I personally would start out as a carpenter. The finished product is much moreinspiring to make you work. YOur not finished with a concrete slab on the ground a house that someone else built and you just covered it in bricks. Carpentry is a real skill and artform at the sametime. With much more options as well. If at anytime you decide to leave...you can start over again in lets say...cabinet making and not be a complete noob.
If you're any good at maths be an electrician. You will never be without a job, plumbers are the same in QLD. If you really want to do one of those three apply for carpentry then in your holidays do a week of each to get an idea of what the jobs really about. When I was in Mackay last week they were advertising for electricians to work at the mines $100,000 + car + phone. No one can tell you how to live your life only you can make that decision.
I would go down the carpenter road. Brickies and grano workers do the majority of their work outdoors, in the sun, rain whatever. Carpentry is mostly indoors, nicer material to work with too. But if you are so undecided, do a Tafe course on all 3 then decide from there.
i been wanting to be carpenter for while. but i got some info on the other 2 and thought it looked good, thats y i made this thread i got a mate whos going to tafe next year doing carpentry. im gettin work experiance these comming holidays in carpentry also. thanks for the input fellas. anymore will be appreciated. cheers, sabby
tafe will be for a pre-appreticeship, some tafes organise a apprenticeship with a business after your done the pre-app. its only for 1 year
of those 3 ide be a chippy, better work than a brickie or a concreter, both of them are **** jobs. if your looking at trades, have u looked at a sparky or a plumber? im a sparky, is reasonably good work and pay once ur app is over is good
i havent actually looked into either of them, sounds alright tho. i heard somewhere that if you go to tafe, it lasts for a while, more than 1 year i THINK, not sure tho
thought about joinery? like carpentry, except you make kitchens, window and doorframes etc imo its better than carpentry cos then you can take more pride in what you do, instead of slapping a few bits of 2x4 together you can make perfectly sculpted frames etc. i love it. its a brilliant job.
Just try and find an apprenticeship first. A prevoc course helps to get one but if you can find an apprenticeship first then you wont have to worry about doing a course. You just do it during your apprenticeship.
i think a sparkys pre app is 4 months, im not 100% sure tho, i didnt need to do one, already worked in trade before, um, if u do it tho, it takes 6 months off ur actual app, so really ur 2 months up, however u dont get paid to do a pre app. ide consider it
wat eva u do dont make the mistake and do mechenics unless u absolutely love it im kinda wishin financially i was a sparky myself but to late to leave my apprenticeship now and as said b4 look 4 an apprenticeship and only go down the prevoc coarse if ya cant find 1 that would be wat i would do anyway
