I've just brought a 88 VN and can hear a rubbing noise in the motor It sounds like the wheel that turns the fan belt is rubbing. Can anyone tell me what he thinks it is and if it's serious

It could be the bearing in the tensioner pulley, mine makes a slight noise but my mechanic said it was fine. There's a few things that run off that belt, water pump, alternator, power steering pump, AC compressor. I'd suggest getting a mechanic to take a listen and see what he thinks.

My dad's VN had a rubbing noise from the water pump for a while, after a month it sheared the pulley off the destroyed the water pump. Luckily he was at the end of the street and could pull straight over avoiding further damage.

But yeah, get it looked at if you can't diagnose it yourself.

I had the same noise until i changed my tensioner pulley but i have told that it is the spring inside that can make that noise also. But i just had to change the pully .

Check that the tensioner pulley is working inside it's normal operating range. There's two little marks and an arrow.
