    Hi guys,

I got a problem with my car, they steering wheel is locked and key won't turn aswell. I can only turn the key by 1mm both way. I moved the car and jacked it up, still no luck.

Does that mean that barrel is stuffed up? or could it be the steering rack? I was told by the service guy that the steering rack needs attention a year ago.

If yes, is there any cheap way i can fix it.
I called a locksmith and he quoted $350 for the job, that is way too much for me.

Does anyone have any guide which shows how to change it with a new one?

    Help would be appreciated..

Steering racks are a common problem with the VY, had to get mine redone to sell my ute, no doubt this one too.

But i would say it's the barrel, and $350 could be the cheaper option.

It will be the ignition lock barrel. They are made of a cheap alloy and are a common fault with Holdens. Your problem will have absolutely nothing to do with the condition of the steering rack.

wiggle the steering wheel, and spray some dry lube on the key, if you don't have any rub a dark (2B/4B/6B) pencil on it. My barrel was getting jammed, but since i sprayed the key with dry lube and the dry lube has transferred to the barrel it works perfectly.

Usually this means the barrel is on the way out.... Mine was difficult for months and then finally gave way... very annoying at around $170 - $200 to fix...
