would noisy bearings in say a water pump/ alternator/ tensioner idler pulley create enough noise to trigger the knock sensor and retard the timing?
I wouldn't think so. An internal detonation is pretty bloody loud and the sensor in on the inside of the block. An external noise would have to be ear drum bursting for the sensor to pick it up.
i figure only the waterpump may be able to. water is a very good medium for trasmitting noise, seeing as the knock sensor is crewed into the coolant jacket i figure that the water pump may possibly cause knock retard. just trying to get some other opinions
I've heard of it happening (but never seen it personally) with lifter noise. Not so sure about anything else though. The frequency has to be the same as for knock also, as frequencies not corresponding to knock are filtered out. (In the knock board on the memcal)?
it takes more than that, i adapted a tune that VL400 did to flash the engine light on knocks, then turned it into a v8 tune (i had a hsv 304 with the knock sensor) and the shift of the transmission (corvette servo) actually set the detonation sensor off. see this video YouTube - Knock light test
It took me a long time to convert that from a V6 tune to a V8 one :0 I'll send you the V6 version (Which I believe was made for Troy) Even a timing chain can set off the sensor in the V6, roots blowers will too. Alot of peopel ask me to switch the knock off on HSV cars because they don't trust it
