I was under the impression that the Alloytec went to the donut sensors that just bolt to the side of the block and don't tap coolant passages like they did with the Ecotec.

You need to get the heater core and thermostat open, pretty much need to drain it while the car is on with the heater on high and you have a garden hose in the coolant inlet.

I took it for a drive last night and it was just over the 1/4 which it never goes up over that, so I drained it as soon as I switched the car off, and only still got around 3l out

Nah, I mean you need to push it out using the water pump and/or the flow from a garden hose, there's a fair few Youtube vids that show you how to do this. Or you just refill it and drain it a bunch of times with water and add coolant concentrate after it goes clear. If you don't set the heater to high and leave it there during your warm up the heater core doesn't really get flushed.

This is for an LS but should give you a pretty good idea - https://forums.justcommodores.com.au/threads/ve-ss-v8-coolant-flush-how-to.225912/
Pictures are missing and it's for an Ecotec, but similar - https://forums.justcommodores.com.au/threads/how-to-flush-a-v6-cooling-system.28762/
Some general talk about flushing an Alloytec - https://forums.justcommodores.com.au/threads/vz-v6-engine-coolant-flush.186119/

You will never get all the coolant out of the engine that's why you flush it out with a hose, if you want to get most of the water out if your using premix then just leave off the return hose and keep adding coolant till you think most of the water is out with the engine running then replace hose or use Concentrate. If you want to remove the coolant from heater pipes then just remove both from the engine.

Because of the location of the thermostat, you won’t get all the coolant out. Also if you have been dropping the coolant and filling again, you will be on your way to having the coolant completely replaced. Make sure you bleed the system after. These do have a self air bleed system but is better to bleed it out manually. There are two recent threads detailing this.

Full flushes can really only be done by a Holden Dealer or radiator workshop with specialised tools.

Thank you, I'm pretty sure I've got most of it out now, I've flushed it 3 times and now its like a tinged yellow color that comes out, that could be to do with corrosion though, which I can't notice any at the moment but that's not to say there isn't any.
I'm only flushing due to replacing the radiator through the week, just waiting fir the new one to arrive.
Might even run one of those bottles of rislone radiator flush through it today

Shouldn't be, the block is alloy so there won't be any 'rust' colour like there would be in an iron block. Just make sure on your last flush you turn the heater to high for like a good half hour at least.

Make sure you are using red coolant that meets GM standards.

Yip type A red coolant, like I said leave off the return pipe on top add pre-mix until it flows through nice and strong color while adding coolant to the radiator, then replace hose and bleed the system, no need to keep dumping wasting money.
