I'd be looking more towards the exhaust hitting the body.

you can go a better quality unijoint though the one thats on it no doubt has been there for the life of the car, Its not uncommon for them to wear out after the years.
I think the last one I used on my old VN was TOYO brand (was only a cheepie)

your diff will make a grinding sound if thats the case. but to be sure... have another listen when you turn the tailshaft and if the sounds in the diff then thats where the problem is

changing the oil may help to quieten the sound but its not a solution to the problem.
You can get a second hand diff from the wreckers cheaper than it would be to rebuild the original though if the mechanic quotes you a reasonable price go for it

my clunk started after the first tyre change i had to do. after the spare was put on is when i first heard it, the first drive was really bad so i put it down to being the spare for some reason, maybe difference in diameter though i doubted it.

When i took it to the kannick to have the tyre changed and full service i asked him to look at the diff, uni etc and to take it for a spin to try diagnose the prob. he said he couldnt put his finger on it and put in a really thick oil, he described it as having same consistency as treacle. Drove it home and all was sweet.

4 months later and another blowout. (these $200 a pop tyres are starting to **** me off). Got the car home and jacked it up, changed the tyre, dropped it, drove it and there it was, the clunk, right after changing the spare again.

Took it back to Kev and he changed the tyre but when i drove home the clunk was still there as i was slowing down etc. (only thing different was that he didnt put the thick oil in).

so, my spare wheel theory is out the window as the second time the tyre was changed to the original the sound was there right away. Mechanic says everything looks and feels ok, (would like to hoist and check for myself if i had the time).

    any ideas??
