My LS3 had this annoying tapping/knocking noise on cold start and it woukd last for a few min until the engine would get to operating temperature.
It annoyed the crap out of me and dealer said all is well and normal.

On the weekend i drained the oil (the car just did 2500k's) and put in fresh oil.
I used Penrite Enviro Plus GF5 5w-30.

The noise is now completely gone and i can sleep again :)

I wonder what crappy oil they use from the factory if it affect the engine this way...I can only assume that i did not flow as well as Penrite...

Anyway...just a tip if people have similar issue with new LS3 to try and eliminate it with better oil...

If you want to stick with GM's global(and warranty) recommendation, Penrite Enviro+ GF5 5w-30
is probably the best oil to use(IMHO). I use it in my L77 Redline.

I use Penrite Premium 5(5w-50) in my LS3 Maloo.

GF5 is really well priced. I will continue to use it. In my VE sv6 i used HPR5 and loved it too...

Just picked up my self a pair of the Penrite Enviro Plus GF5 5w-30 on Sunday from Autobarn.
Was on special as well @ $42.99 for the 5L bottle. Not bad considering the 10L tank goes for $164 @ Sueprcheap :p

Have only done about 50km since the oil change but so far so good it sounds all :)

Sometimes as simple as that.

I have found for my car, HPR10 makes the engine nice and quiet, where as other oils which make the specs and exceed them are noisy liek Castrol

Trial and error.

Standard lifters are the weakness. Had to replace LS2 at 170000, when lifter collapsed.
Fitted new LS3 then started ticking at 35000.

Did cam upgrade and LS7 lifters, double valve springs, moly rods, and running Penrite Vantage Full Synthetic 5W-30 Full Zinc
and also LiquiMoly. Problems gone

Make sure you change oil religiously every 5000km with new filter. If you can afford it...Royal Puprle is the best
Be very kind to engine until up to temp...then thrash as and when required.:)

Dont use cheap oil it's false economy. A replacement LS3 is $12500 +install. OUCH

@LSX Tuner, the issue with @Ron Burgundy's LS3 wasn't oil or lifters. It was oval bores cause by a poor quality as built example of the factory LS3. He had it replaced under warranty and from reports it's all better now. He has a threa dall about the issue...

Matter of opinion. RP doesn’t get much love on Bob Is The Oil Guy - the largest oil forum in the world.
