Supercharged VT Calais
Hey guys i bought my first car, a 1998 Vt Supercharged Calais with 230k on the clock for $3000.
Since then (about a month) ive had to rebuild the bloody motor for near $3000 because of the sly turkey that sold it to me.
When i purchased it i was aware that the diff had a loud whine, anyway, how much will this cost to replace?
Im pretty mechanically minded and not too bad on the servicing and tools, is this a job i can tackle myself?
Would i best off buying a second hand v6 one straight out of a wreck? or a recond one? or get my mechanic to put it in?
Could somebody please tell me the sort of prices im looking at, seeing as i have next to no money left from the rebuild?
Cheers heaps fellas
Chris

Changing an IRS diff is a piece of piss, I did it with basic knowledge and basic tools. Its all nuts and bolts basically just put it all back the way it came off and have a read over the gregorys manual before you start.

If you're short of cash I'd suggest a wreckers yard where you get the whole diff in one piece.
Then fit as one unit. And cross your fingers it is a good one.

If you go the other way and repair your original diff....
Gets pretty expensive once the diff specialists get involved replacing bits then setting it up properly.
Though you're guaranteed to get a quiet reliable diff.
Rough guestimate. Min $700 up to $2500+ max with new gears.

Out of curiosity, what makes you certain the problem is the diff?
