Is it safe to say the VN was the first with a VIN number and VL's had a body number only? my vin number. 6h8vnk35hkl306610 built 6/10/1988.

Ok I'd say even though VIN numbers started with the VN it was law to have it on all Aust cars from the 1/1/89 and as the VN was only 4 mths away from that start date it was easier to start then 4 the 1st VN onwards..

From ur VN VIN number there I can tell u a little info, all cars made here will start with a 6, h8 is Holden Motor Co, VN it's a VN, K is Commodore, L is which plant made it and the 306610 is the serial number..

Found the pic of the VL body number.

From that pic hard to see, it's a sedan, executive, 3lt 6 cyl, 4 speed auto with a diff ratio 3.45

Sure does. Thanks Stampede. More work needed yet but I add to the picture of the first VN serial number every week or 2.
