Hey gang my heater fan had about 10 leafs in it and was wondering how they got in there or how do it stop it? I could put my hand in there when the glove box was out and the switch to recirculate I could put my hand in there.
They get in from the plenum at the base of the windscreen. To prevent it you should regularly clean all the leaves and other crap that inevitably gathers on top of the plastic cover under the wipers. You should also check that the little plastic 'cages' are present and fitted correctly at the ends of the plastic cover. If you are keen, you might like to remove the wipers, undo the plastic nuts that hold the cover on and clean out what has already got under the plastic cover. VS Series II had an additional plastic screen that sits over the intake to the interior fan, under the plenum cover. You might also look for one of those at a wrecker or even price one new.
I cant get the plastic section under the wipers off. Half the clips come off and the others won't. I had to cut it in half when the heater fan switch thingy died last winter. Might stop at the wreckers tomorrow and get the plastic thing, clips and the cover for the heater vent under there.. Any tile on getting the wipers off?
The plenum cover may even be available new at a reasonable price. Probably worth a call to a Holden dealer. If you lift the wipers away from the screen, near the hinge point you will be able to see a notch in each wiper arm and a corresponding hole in the piece that is bolted to the wiper spindles. If you put a nail or similar (I use an Allen key) in the hole and release the wiper arm so that the notch catches on the nail, the spring load is removed from the wiper spindle and there is a nice lever in the form of the wiper arm to work them loose. They should just about fall off.
Nar sorry mate I forgot all about it. Was at the wreckers the other day and most of them are cracked or broken.. I will go to the local stearlership tomorrow after work and ask.
I've broken so many plenums when I was trying to find a working wiper motor at the wreckers. Those little clips are excessive you really only need 3 to hold it on, mine are that funky and rusted they literally lift off with little force. I had issues with cracked cages, getting some netting and placing it over where the cages sit, then replacing the plenum has helped, also keeps out even small nuts and bugs
