    Hi All,

Just seeking your ideas to seal leaking tailights, particularly the ones in the boot lid. Yes, i could hit them with our old friend Sikaflex but they may be a bit difficult to remove in need.

    So any other ideas ?

    Thanks.

    Try 'non hardening' windscreen sealant.
It will only form a skin and cleans up with kerosene.

sellys around the edge where it goes onto the boot and the bolt holes, may as well do the garnish as well.
did the Calais like that when they leaked they came out fine when i had to remove just a little bit of a cleanup of the old silicone

    Thanks all.

Yeah, have thought about that but funds are a bit tight at the moment. Assume new ones come with proper seals ?

Do you know if the Sikaflex 255 Extra+ windscreen sealant that I used to reseal my rear 1/4 windows meets that spec ? I can't get a lot of detail of the tube as the bulk of it is in Japanese lol.

Not keen on using silicone due to it's rust promotion properties.

Alternatively, I have thought about getting some thin rubber (maybe a couple of mm thick) and craft a seal from that. Any thoughts ?

Most Sikaflex products set in such a way that you need to destroy the whole car to seperate the parts.
IIRC Repco sell it. It states on the cartridge that it is non hardening.

Are the lamps filling with water or is water leaking into the boot?

The drivers side reverse light portion has some internal discolouration (assuming from water collection) and when looking inside the boot lid I can see a water trail from the light sections on both sides, heading downwards. The very bottom of the boot lid (where it meets the rear bar when closed) also has some rust on it and the paint on the bar has some rust coloured discolouration transferred from the boot lid.

There is no evidence of leaking from the centre garnish area.

I have sprayed the inside of the boot lid with rust preventor.

So IIRC is a brand ?

    IIRC= If I Recall Correctly
    :)

I would seal the light themselves with Sikaflex as they are glued together anyway.

UPDATE : Went to the local Clark Rubber to investigate my thoughts on making a new seal and they suggested some 3mm foam should do the job.

Made a paper template, cut the foam to shape and it has fitted up pretty well. Time will tell if it works I suppose.

If anyone is interested, full details and pics are in post #124 on page 5 of my ride thread.
