Should probably post this in the VR-VS forum section.
If you take a look at this picture, you can see the engine number on the RH side of the block at the bottom of the V to the right of the cam timing chain gear.
This image is of a 3800 V6 engine but the ecotec engine number is in the same location.

It should be located under the DFI unit by the water pump outlet.
I have attached an image to specify the location.
