Hi i have build a vt commodore into a speedway car and im needing to get the diff locked so what I'm wanting to know is can you just take off the back plate and weld it from there

Of course you can.
Commonly referred to in the 60's and 70's as a CIG locker.
Probably called today a BOC locker considering BOC bought out CIG/changed name from CIG.

You have to manipulate the CV's a bit but they will pop out, if they have never been out before you might need to give the CV a tap with a hammer to dislodge them from the stub shaft hub.
