Hey all,

Im looking for some info about fitting a long range tank into a vl. The installation part isn't the issue, however, I've noticed most long range tanks are out of a vq, vr or vs these days and on the actual sender, it has only 1 yellow plug which runs the pump/fuel level and on a vl, they come with two plugs.

Is it a big job to convert the fuel tank wiring on a vl to suit that newer 1 yellow plug? Or can I use my existing vl fuel sender unit in that long range tank to avoid changing the wiring ?

Thanks :)

Use a VN tank = same everything as your VL EFI with 2 pumps and bolt on sender unit but not if your Vl is V8 with 1 pump and older style sender unit with no bolts.

For using your sender unit in other VQ/VS tanks, apart from electrical connnections they have 2 pump out/return line pipe outlets so your VL would need extra return outlet modded into it.
The 1 yellow plug is a VS sender unit, use the earlier vr vp vq sender units that have 2 white plugs and 2 pipes.

Thanks for the reply mate. So far the only long range tanks that ive come across are out of vs/vr statesmans which have the single yellow plug on the fuel sender unit.

Lets say if i wanted a long range tank with the sender with that 1 yellow plug in the vl, is it a big headache to change the existing wiring in the vl to suit that 1 yellow plug? and still have a working pump/fuel gauge?

With those fuel senders with the 1 yellow plug, do they still use a 2 pump system (1 internally and 1 externally) or just one internally?

What VL do you have @ 6cyl EFI or V8 carby ????

VR-VS tanks, 1 pump so it not just wiring mod, may need to change pump/s depending what VL you have. Larger tanks also have different pumps for VR-VS V6-V8.

Im guessing you have a vl 6cyl efi car, just thinking of doing a bigger tank swap before you commit to buying tank/sender units which are very pricey and hard to find in good/working order.

Sorry mate I forgot to mention it, I have a vl turbo rb30.

I understand that the vr-vr sender's have one pump only so im willing to change the pump If required.

To make a long range tank work on my vl, what sort of pump do I need to change it too and how to get around to wiring it differently?

I'd just use the vr/vs module with a 255 drop in pump if 98 340 or 460 for e85. Just remember you'll need an aftermarket regulator to handle the flow return.

Figure out the sender wires and the full and empty readings and run a resistor til it's in the factory gauge sweep.

Cant remember exact specs for V6/V8 in tank pumps, original V8 pump should be enough but any bosh 044, walbro/pierburg are good replacements. Also VR-VS tanks need after market external fuel pressure regulator mounted in bay, best place is on brake master cylinder bracket above the chassis fuel lines. Your VL stock regulator is with external pump.

2 ways for wiring and mod for return line as VR-VS tank return line is on sender unit and your VL the return is on the tank.
From memory yellow plug is 4 pin. The wiring using tank yellow female plug, get the yellow male plug. Cut your 2 plugs off and re pin your existing 4 loom wires into yellow male plug. Look at back of VR-VS sender unit and trace/test what wires go to pump/gauge sender, and match your VL loom. I wont mention colours as it can get cross wired in type understanding. Should be easy when you look under your car/tank to confirm colour wires but do tests.

As I wrote before, you can use VL sender in the VR-VS tanks, need to modify VL outside crimped sender pipe for extending your old VL tank fuel return line and add rubber line inside to go with pump into tank swirl pot. Doing this way means you keep your wiring the same with the 2 pump stock factory VL and only have to do the return line mod on sender unit.

PS .. Bigger VN-VP and VQ statesmans tanks, sender units, pumps and wiring are identical to VL, much easier than changing to the VR-VS bullshitt.

Hey Johnni, I'm in the process of doing this myself, I've encountered headache after headache, what did you end up doing in the end? Go back to VL sender or persist with VS sender ?

Why not get your original tank pin holes fixed, either welded or brazed/soldered at a radiator specialist. Hard to find a good original 35 year old VL tank now at a sensible price.

Any early tank with the twist turn style fuel sender (without bolts) like your VL V8 sender should fit.
