It started today at intersections when taking off i would hear a couple of loud bangs in the rear, at the time i thought it was a backfire.
Then later this arvo the rear started playing these huge knocking noises when sitting at roughly 5-10km/h i haven't been game enough to go any quicker as the knock is vibrating through the whole back of the car.
I can drive it roughly walking pace with no sign of a knock and also in reverse the knock doesn't seem to show.
I'm assuming something either in the rear axle/diff if anyone could enlighten me.

To explain the sound it just sounds like metal on metal clunking, that you would hear from 500m away. lol

Could be Tailshaft centre bearing and also check uni- joints.

Is it VR or VS ?
V6 or V8 ?
Solid rear axle or IRS ?

If its a ute it will most likely be live axle.

My guess is it's the centre bearing. Pretty common they begin to crack and if left too long they go bang. Mine did and it trashed the shaft. I bought a SH one and had a new bearing fitted, along with new uni's. If it's slapped around a bit then you will be best to grab a SH one and have it rebuilt. The smacking around can make it out of balance and it could fail again, unless it's rebalanced but that works out expensive.

As losh said, it won't be irs on a ute.
Yours is a stretched ute being ex ambo ?
Jack up the rear and check for play in the tail shaft. The centre bearing is more towards the front and on the next bracket behind the trans mounting.

It’s on the side of the road so will check in morning, might be able to limp it home but afraid it will do damage might have to get a trailer.

It was a bad centre bearing, a mechanic has put a new one in completely ripped me off $350 later.
Now when it drives hitting bumps you hear a knock under the car as if the tail shaft is knocking up against something.
Do you think maybe he hasn't balanced the shaft at all? near the joints?

Depends on what is stated on the receipt.Take it back & ask...if don't like quote/work/service etc take it elsewhere.

Could be just new centre bearing & labour cost.

Tbh could be several different things causing issues described.

Did you give him a new shaft to get rebuilt like I said? The other issue is a genuine bearing is normally a must. Don't do either of those and expect it could blow again.
