Lowering VE SSV with SSSL all round, do I need guard rolling for the rear with 20s?

Hi all,

I am lowering my car with SSSL and GT short shockers soon, is guard rolling necessary if I wanna fit 20x10 rims for the rear?? Offset is +42.

Can anyone share with me about their lowering/rims experience? Cheers.

Guards will need to be rolled. I've got 20x9.5 with +45 offset on my rears and it scrubbed on pretty much every turn unless I slowed down a lot.

1. With those 10 inch +42 offset wheels and 275 wide tyres on the rear you will definitely have to roll the guards. You will need a +50 offset (or higher) offset wheel for the 275 tyre to just clear. (Some people reckon they have got away with +48 offset on 10 inch rim and the 275 tyre without rolling).

Also be aware that if the car is lowered you can have the tyre rubbing on the rear bumper bracket with sufficient suspension movement.

2. With those 42 offset wheels and a 255 wide tyre instead of the 275 tyre(absolute bare minimum for a 10 inch rim) you would clear the guards with no rolling necessary.

Just buy the same wheel specs as HSV 20x8.5 36p fronts 245/35R20 tyres and 20x9.5 56p rear with 275/30R20 tyres and you'll have no issues what so ever no matter how low you go.

If your car is metallic black, or metallic at all, guard rolling will show. Unless you intend to paint.
It will create ripples around the edge, barely noticeable on a white car.

Any wheel shop can follow the guards for you or you can buy a roller just warm the paint first before you do it

I have seen some good jobs where I could not see panel damage BUT saw a white VE wagon today with ripples in the guard panel just above/around where the rolling had been done. Looked tacky and was obviously a result of the rolling.

Geez...my car is metallic silver... I would think twice about guard rolling.

How about this off set?

20X8.5 FRONT, 20X9.5 REAR, OFFSET 45P

If I get a pair of 5mm wheel spacers for the rears, that will make them +50 offset, and the rims are 1/2 inch narrower, I can also fit slightly narrower tyres to taper in the walls. Will that be ok?

5mm spacer will make them 40P and it's not needed anyway 9.5 45p will fit fine and 275s are fine also.

Guard rolling isn't that bad it just depends on who does it.
