The build No is found in 2 places - 1 last 6 numbers on the windscreen tag bottom left side by the window wiper and 2 the fire wall by the brake boster.
Under the bonnet 1 compliance plate has the exact day the car was built eg 10/08/91 + the body number.

    The number will be between
    520,000 8/91
    528747 17/9/91

    Damn, she's close. 523885.

She was purchased by Tasmania Police on the 16th of the 8th 1991. Bugger...

Um...I'll have to go out tomorrow and have a look. I have her owners handbook her with me, so I just got the above mentioned info out of that. Why the 5th?

I'm collecting the build day/serial numbers so I can find out what the actual number holden I have.
Silly hobby I know. But could be useful 1 day.

The 5th is just a guess from the info I have already.

eg the 6,000,000 holden is a VX. (I'ts at the Birdwood museum) I don't have the details of it yet - but I hope to some day.

hi interesting thread. i have had my vn since brand new and bought it on 2nd sep 1988. It was the first vn exec on display on the Garry warren showroom floor so tommorrow i will check the vin and dates and let yas know what it is. One thing i do know is that it was the first manual v6 vn ever made as garry and warren told me they used it as the guiney pig to all the other vn manuals. Not sure how i can prove that now though? If it is one of the first someone in melbourne can meet to verify it for yas also. I cant wait till tommorrow to find this info out, cheers guys!

It could be a very early VN. The last VL body No. I have found to date is 293667 (which takes the 270000-290000 range for the start of the VN's out)
The Vn No.'s to date are 294999 to 528994.
My wagon was a 5 speed - but I test drove a gold colour 5 speed sedan in Woomera in Sep 88 (rep from Plaza holden drove in 500kms up to Woomera for us to drive). I had a worked 253 VB commodore at the time and the VN 5 speed was like WOW. We had burnouts at will (Goodyear 185 tyres).

Last 6 digits of the VIN number is what you're after.

On Ruby, the plate on the left hand side has built : AUG91
And on the right hand side plate it's got GVM: 21/8/91

But she was bought on the 16th. How does that work?

I have found some funny numbers for the VL
    Feb 86 #203005 & Feb 86 #985340

if anyone else has an original manual vn v6, can they check if the transmission number says M78 or T5? on the left hand side plaque of engine bay.
