ls1 DIY Engine Oil Change?

Howdy!!

I had a bit of a look around here an on the net, couldn't find any info for a DIY oil change for a Gen III. surely not everyone puts there car in the shop for this??

So i had a crack at the steps involved for my VU series II SS ute

1. Warm car up a bit
2. Jack up car and put on jack stands
3. Remove oil filler cap, then sump plug and let drain
4. When most of the oil has drained, remove oil filter
5. Clean sump plug & oil filter areas, spills etc
6. Smear clean oil on new oil filter o-ring, nearly fill filter with oil and re-attach
7. Put sump plug/washer back on
8. Add about 4 litres of fresh oil, check oil level, add more oil etc etc till all good – put oil filler cap back on

Does this sound about right including the order?
Do you guys bother with engine oil flush before changing oil?
I don't need a torque wrench do I?
Any other tips?

that all sounds pretty good the only thing is step 6, you dont need to fill the new filter with oil. you should'nt need a torque wrench.

bout it mate, maybe when the plugs out, tip some fresh oil in till it comes out gold at the bottom, give it a mild flush

All fine, except as said above, no need to fill up the filter before you put it on. If you really want to it won't hurt, but you're just risking making more mess for no good reason.

What you want to do is after your step 8, when you've added those 4L of oil, is get the car off the stands and back on level ground, then start the engine and let it run for a ~2-3 minutes - this gets the oil pumping around the engine, and into the filter. Then stop the engine, and give it about 5 minutes for the oil to drain back down to the sump. Check the level, top up as necessary, waiting a couple of minutes between top-ups to give the oil a chance to make it to the sump and register on the dip stick.

Also, really no need to "flush" with new oil before putting the sump plug back on, there's nothing that needs flushing that you'll get out just by dripping some oil through it, it's just wasting good oil! Remember the filter is there to pick up any nasties.

VX SS (Original owner).
I have had my VX SS from new and been Holden serviced from new except for the last 3 services which have been done at a specialist LS1 workshop, probably not really nesessary, but
have noticed both Holden and the new LS1 workshop have always replaced the sump plug seal, and both have always put 6 litres of oil in the LS1, which brings it probably about half a litre above the full mark if left to sit overnight, if checked after about 5 minutes it is usually around the full mark on the dipstick. Holden increased the oil capacity on the VY and revised the dipsticks and tube on LS1's so they read full with the extra bit of oil in them.

changing your oil

Im a holden mechanic,
1. Raise car with hoist or stands, jus make sure your cars even.
2. Remove oil cap.
3. Remove sump plug
(Let oil drain)
4. Remove filter
(optional) add new sump plug washer, and O-ring on filter.
(finished draining)
5. Replace new oil filter and sump plug.
6. Add 4 litres of oil.
7. Start car for 10 seconds.
8. check dipstick, and add oil accordingly.

To run new oil through your engine you dont need to warm it up, just 10seconds is all it requires.
No matter what car, the dipstick marking is always 1litre between "low" and "full"
