stainless vs mild steel in extractors have been told by one exhaust company rust from mild steel extractors will damage cats any ideas as unsure path to go down pacemaker extractors and modify my cats or diffilippo stainless extactors and cats is the extra money warranted

damage to cats is either caused by running extreamly rich, or extreamly lean causing high temperatures.

If the car sat there for 5 years, yes u would most probably get rust coming through, however this would be after your mufflers had rusted out completly.

    Stay with mild steel.

Starting to think seriously about making some reasonable power from my SS.

At the moment all it has is a 2.5 inch twin catback system (unknown brand as yet)

Im looking to go MAFless and get an OTR CAI. Also strap a set of Headers on aswell. The transmission, maybe a shift kit, simply because i dont like the way it shifts (auto)

Can anybody recommend me any exhaust shops for the exhaust and any tune shops for the tune?

Minux, have you heard of DTM Racing Transmissions in Geelong? Ever had any dealings with them?

you dont need a shift kit as you can adjust line pressure and shift points when it is tuned

I agree with GMMAD there - wait until the tuner adjusts the line pressures in the tune, which sharpens up the shift response to a very large degree, before you even contemplate a shift-kit.

You will most likely find that you won't want a shift-kit afterwards anyway and can spend that cash on something else, maybe hi-flow cats?

    Cheers,

    Macca

Oh really? Cause i've met Adam (dont know if you know him) through trade school and he seems to know what he's talking about as far as transmissions go. Mentioned that they had the software that could tune an LS1, but think i'll just get all the tuning done at a workshop with proven results.

    Nah sorry, from Dandenong area.

Went to three different shops to get quotes.

First One:- $1700 using Redback system. I nearly laughed in his face, this was after he gave me a blank look when i asked if they did exhausts for "LS1's" didnt know what it was until i called it a Gen3.

Second One:- $1500 with metal cats. Custom extractors

Third One:- $1295 with s/steel cats. X-Force Headers.

Get pacemaker extractors (tri-y or 4into1), magnaflow hi flow steel cats (not ceramic), and either 2.5" redback/xforce/pacemaker cat back exhaust.

Thats reasonable. I paid $1150 for magnaflow hi flow steel cats and pacemaker tri-y's installed.
Also, if you pay to get them installed, make sure you keep your cats and old piping, as you can sell these (i think 1 cat alone is worth about $50). If you don't, the exhaust shop will.

"Just to let everyone know, Pacemaker are increasing their prices by 10% on 1/9/2008.

We have been selling them at discounted rates, so we will have to pass on this increase.

If you are thinking about extractors, buy them sooner rather than later.

Everyone is putting their prices up to cover the huge increases in the price of steel and stainless tube and sheet metal."
