Just a quick one here guys, i'm sure this has been discussed before but i can't seem to find info on the subject...

If i remove the honeycomb from my standard MAF sensor, will this screw up my tune a lot or will it run fine without a re-tune???

Leave it in and clean your MAF using MAF cleaner or contact cleaner! On a car we did just by cleaning the MAF we picked up 7kw at the wheels, because of all of the oil (from the air filter) that had coated the MAF itself causing the car to run lean :(

Even on cars that don't run an oil impregnated filter we've seen MAF's to be amazingly absolutely filthy! We notice every time we machine a batch of changeover MAF's

If you not going to get a tune, leave the honeycomb in.

    Cheers
    Steve

the important part is the little wires between the posts, make sure you don't break em.

i've never thought of that. might have to check mine and see what it looks like. personally i think the standard ecotec MAF looks very restricitve but without getting a retune theres not a lot you can do about it

The honeycomb regulates the air flow over the sensor. Without it the sensor will not give accurate information to the PCM.

Thanks heaps guys, thats what I suspected. i'll be going for a ported MAF when it comes time to tune but i was just wondering whether anything could be done in the meantime. I'll try cleaning it, sounds like good advice to me

i dont know that a ported maf would really be worth while man, the standard maf takes a bit of power before it starts to max out. if you were keen for something larger, a LS1 maf can be used on the ecotecs (ive got one on my VS) if you tune with kalmaker software.

Yeah i thought of an ls1 MAF but i figured it would prob be cheaper for a ported item

could be cheaper - although i have seen them going for way more than they're worth (the ported eco maf's that is).
the problem with a ported one is also that no one will know exactly how big it is (for tuning purposes) and the porting is usually only on the metal parts either side of the actual hot wire sensor (looking at a maf you can see its made up of three pieces) that are ported out. so its not truely larger through the centre. i have heard that ported maf's are/can be quite difficult to tune with as they're not a standard size, ie. a tuner will have the data already to run a LS1 maf so its an easy job, whereas a ported maf is going to be unique in its own size and flow, so alot of playing around untill it comes good is needed.

brand new is like $400 (i know -exxy!) and second hand ive seen them anywhere from like $50 to $150 or so usually.
i actually ended up with a brand new one, originally bought a second hand one only to realise id been screwed over and it was an ls2 maf (glad i only paid $80 for it! so not too much out of pocket over it all) which has a different style plug so it cant be plugged into the ecotec.
