gay everyone, im thinking about getting 1 or 2 12" subs for my wagon soonish. What i want to know is, is it possible to make a box thatwill fit the amp and subs (eg amp sitting between the subs) that will be able to be removed easily, but still be sturdy.

I was thinking large amounts of velcro or something on the bottom of the box to hold it down?? and just disconnect the wiring to the amp when i wanna take it out??

attaching your amp to the sub box isn't really a great idea. it increases the probability that the amp will fail due to all the vibration. especially if you have 2 12" subs.

I have 2 x 12" subs in the back of my stagon, they are not attatched to the floor at all the box is heavy so it doesnt move at all. But yeh later on i was thinking of getting some velcro on the bottom

Hey there mate I have 2 rockford fosgates in my boot in a box and they dont move at all ,I dont have any bolts or restraints holding them down just the weight seems to be enough,as for the amp I think mounting them under a seat is the go both for cooling and secuirty, just think if someone is gonna steel your gear make it harder for trhem dont put it all in one place so that its easier 4 em

Although I hear that alot, I think it's bullsh!t. If u have the amp in the boot with the subs it's still gonna get heaps of vibrations through it, no matter where it's located.

True, but it’s gonna shake a lot more if it’s screwed to your box. Especially if you have lots of flexing in the panels.

Circuit boards don’t like to be shaken. the solder joins can crack and it places stress on the legs of the components.

I’m not saying you amp IS going to fail if you do this. I’m just saying it’s more likely.

ok, sounds good to me. what sort of options do i have for wiring if i put the amp under my seat?? thats if i make a custom sealed box? can i get sealed terminals, like what you get on bought boxes from somewhere??

I have a 10 inch in a box with the amp mounted on the box in my wagon, and have some hooks screwed onto it and then hook it onto the cargo barrier which stop's it sliding around, no dramas with vibration through the amp yet, but it does make sence that it could shorten the life of an amp, so I am looking at moving the amp to under the passanger seat at the moment.

i was goin to deck out my boot and screw the amp to the box but because its gonna be cheap 1 to start with it aint gonna last long any way so i might put it under the passenger seat so it will last a lil longer. if u are goin to have a floating floor then u could cut out where the box will sit and sit it in there. that way it wont go n e where because it will be sorta in the floor. if u get wot i mean!

my brother had a 12" sub in his boot, cos the way he drove it slid around all over the place and dented his car from the inside out. But ive heard of a guy using locks from a tool box two on each side, the locks were pemanantly fixed to the floor, this stops theives as well, well it stops them from taking the whole box could probably still take you sub!!

ok im all up on this one... i mounted my amp to my box but put a thin sheet of high density rubber between them, reduces vibration by 80%, buts it important to keep in mind that these amps are designed to take a pounding from a sub.

as far as making it removable thats easy... a rok strap is bolted to my box and clips in either side of my boot... does not slide at all but i can just un-clip it if need be

i can attach a pic if need be

Mate, believe what you want, I really don’t give a stuff. But the fact is unless they pumped the inside of an amp full of potting to stop any movement of components there is always the chance that vibration will cause problems. Especially if an amp doesn’t use a double sided PCB.

id agree with dephilile on this, his arguement makes far more sense. Rather than ' i saw a car with an amp on a sub box so it must be ok in all cases.'

hmm, im answering my own thread

phil has it right. vibrations will make the amp fail sooner, its just no one knows how much the amps life will shortened. end of subject.
if you have a rmovable box with amp mounted on the box, semi, then you will also need to have a distroblock (probably the easiest and cheapest way) to allow you to disconnect the power cable while not leaving a power wire in the bot ready to short on something. jaycar stock an unfused distro block. its cheap too.

i had a 12" sub all boxed up just sitting in my boot, fell over a few times when going around corners quickly! i thought about velcro, but that would look crap, so i'm thinking of making a simple screw mount at the back, which with a couple of screws wouldnt be too difficult to remove when required
