Hey gang,

Curious what people think these marks may be? There was nothing loose in the cylinder once the head was pulled.
I'm thinking either:
-detonation
-contamination (big chunk of carbon)
-engine damage (piece of piston ring that has exited exhuast?)

Something went through that cylinder. What? You'll probably Never know unless you find evidence Of something missing elsewhere.

Looks fairly Minor, if the valves/valve seats are ok I wouldn't be to worried. If it really bothers you you could clean it up lightly to remove sharp edges etc.

Is the cylinder wall scratched or scored ? If not, it wont be a broken ring.
Could have been damage from 'something' years ago that has been fixed before you got it, but has left evidence.
If you do clean the top of the piston, don't remove that ring of carbon around the top of the bore.

Someone could be missing 10mm socket. ;)

Looks like whatever it was got out...
Have a look at the entry to the cat on that bank, it might still be there.

Could be a part of the spark plug on a previous set. Bounced around a few times and exited out the exhaust.
It clearly still runs so not to worry.

That's a good guess.

Thanks everyone for your input. I am dumping a fair bit of cash into her so just want to be sure it's worth it.

Cylinder wall is all good.

Thanks for your reply.

In terms of this carbon- do you mean at the top of the cylinder above where the compression ring would reach at TDC? Does this help seal? Some of it has come off from having cleaner sprayed on it when removing gasket residue.

The carbon at TDC of the bore, not the carbon on the piston.

My first car (last century, when I was young and had enough knowledge to be dangerous :) ) I did a valve grind and clean up. It went from blowing no smoke, to blowing a lot of smoke after I cleaned that ring.
That didn't matter much as I went full ricer with rebuild, balance, head and all the '60s go-fast stuff soon after, but after that experience, I never touched a bore again.

Something played a game of ping pong in there!!!

I'd smooth out any sharp edges & call it good.

Lot of the muck in there be from pcv etc dumping oil back into intake.
