Here are my two problems, I'm getting close to 2k's per litre after I redid the heads. Missing, and a really strong fuel smell in the exhaust and engine bay.

Second is when I take my foot of at the lights, no accelerator, the car will eventually reach 70k's. All no throttle. Idles in neutral at 2200 revs for about a minute the drops down to about 1200, stays the same in all gears.

This car is driving me crazy.

I think that might be the next bit. Even your diagnosed. I just wish finances weren't an issue. Just finished uni, go back to full time hours in a fortnight.

Lol, This might sound really stupid but it is an idea. Check for a fuel leak. might help with the consumption problem. who knows?

Yeah will do. Tomorrows job is checking earths, new injector o rings, and fuel check. Even when I unplug a lead or an injector, it still runs the same.

Lol, well it is a VT. Maybe It doesn't like you anymore and this is the sign to upgrade to a VY/VZ or maybe a VE?

Not sure yet. I'm a muso and carry a stack of guitars and amps and keyboards etc on a regular basis so I need something that affords the practicality of my wagon. Preferably something cheap to run and service.

With all that fuel splashing around, I hope you don't smoke!

sounds like a massive vacuum leak
or possibly your throttle cable is stuck partially open
check your codes may be a hint there

I reckon vacuum leak as well. Purge hose on the bottom of the throttle body? Were the heads and intake manifold perfectly clean? Wasn't an old bit of gasket or something still there?

Purge hose is on. I'm thinking the same. All gasket faces were spotless. Spent a day cleaning everything. Also, heads were welded for cracks between valves and duly reco'd. Would a leak in the inlet manifold rubber seals cause this, especially the insane fuel consumption? And so far I've done 70'ks with the engine back together, if I take the inlet off will I need a new gasket kit? I have a feelin I may have put the rubber seals on wrong.

Re your second problem, make sure you haven't adjusted the throttle cable too tight on the adjustment near the throttle body. It needs to be quite loose, otherwise you will get the symptoms you are experiencing.

When you say you "redid the heads" what does that mean? Cleaned them up? Larger valves? Ported and polished? Did you get a professional to "redid the heads" or did you do it yourself?

Heads were done professionally. A few cracks between valves were welded. All valves were re seated. Other than the gasket faces being shaved, the guy, Paul Gilbert from Gilbert cylinder heads in southport said they were good for another 150'000.

Will check the throttle tomorrow morning. Cheers

Could a leak in the rubber seals cause the massive fuel consumption?

if a proffessional did the job he obviously didnt do it properly so take it back. unless of course he only 'redid the heads' and you rebuilt the engine yourself. in which case.... maybe dont blame the proffessional

ok from what you've described, there is a massive vacuum leak around the manifold beit base, runners, plenum or throttle.

just before you start removing ****, grab a can of crc with the nozzle, in quick spirts, spray around the edges, if there is a leak it will suck in the crc and the revs will increase. you've found your leak, note it and continue checking.

if your not sure about the crc, i would be pulling it off and checking the gaskets and o-rings.

    wow 3000 posts :)

I rebuilt it, the pro did the heads. Not blaming him, the guys a legend. Comes very highly recommended from local mechanics and the boys at cheapa auto.

Will do te crc test tomorrow. I've had new gaskets on for about 75 k's. Will I need a new inlet manifold gasket kit or would the old ones be ok? The rubber seals didn't fit over the block very well at all. Almost as if they were too thin. Is there any difference between s1 and s2 engines that would effect this. I got a series one vrs kit for the heads.

Dont use old gasket's..It will just cause problem's
Series 1 is the same except for diffrent location on the PCV valve. between the plenum and runner's
But yeh.. new gasket's is the way to go..
Make sure to put silicon in the corner's of the orange seal's.
