I have a white 97 Holden VT with 5.0 lt V8 and when i shift into drive the is a quiet clunk and the back end dumps down under the power to drive forward. but when i shift back into N if i dont do it really really slowly with alot of brake there is a PING sounds like metal.(ting ping ding etc) does sort of do it putting from park into reverse or N to Reverse but more so in drive. My guess is Diff? but searching the forums im getting mixed answers as none seem to be quite the same as my problem as far as i can tell some say tail shaft, or (uni joints) i think someone mentioned if thats the name of the joint on the tail shaft? (or is that cv joint?) or would it be a transmission related problem? is there any tests i can do under the car to check? if i jack up the arse end is there a way to test if its diff slap or the joints or what? Thanks in advanced guys.
Don't think you have anything to worry about. Mine has done the same for years. You may find that your idle speed is higher than normal which may be a contributing factor. Standard idle speed is around 650rpm unless your car has been modified.
Car is running on gas so would that be a factor? it does feel like it shifts late or is less responsive unless you really flat foot it. would this be because of the gas or maybe the trans just needs a service or would it all be engine tune? engine speed would that be a gas tune (gas specialist fix) or regular motor mechanic should be able to sort this out? PS there is no whining or humming etc like some people explain from a bad diff ( where the car starts to sound like a public transport bus ) haha
Look into backlash. The older and more used things are the sloppier, backlash, they will get. If you can pinpoint it though it can be a sign of something on the way out. Edit: just read last post, if its a mechanical noise that you can also feel its prob not the gas. Maybe get trans and diff oils changed and check for excessive backlash in driveline.
yeah ill run it down to the local trans and diff specialists tomorrow and see what they say, was just curious as to what it might be and if it was a common problem (easy to diagnose) for reference the rpm on idle in N is around 850-900 give or take and when you put it in drive the back dumps down under load and the revs drop to around 600-700 (guessing as its a V8 it bogs down more in the arse end when in gear due to torque? (all my 4cyl and V6's never dropped down as much) the back also springs up rather fast and a tad hard when you go from drive to N if you do it at a normal to fast pace. just ease it really slowly from drive to N and it doesnt spring up as harshly and makes little to no noise. So ill look into backlash as it sounds like somewhere between Trans and diff there might be slack would make the most sense. Thanks
Probably just a bit of lash in the spider gears. My Monaro does the same thing. Nothing to worry about. Just drive it until it dies.
