Hey all,

Short while ago had supposed 100,K VT V6 engine fitted to VS S1 after doing both head gaskets.(still got 46,000K after damage before dying)
The replacement engine has had metallic rattle sound at idle & very light accel since installed. :ranting:
4 Weeks Later auto died,:b: got reco fitted by same mech, checked compter on Tech 2 - no codes. Has been ongoing now for three weeks. He didnt supply, just fitted the engine, agrees that there is a noise (he reckons its pinging) but says it is just running lean and to use premium. The :shooting: (Unamed) Holden wreckers does not want to come to the party on the 3 month warranty.
It is a f*#ken VT engine designed to run on unleaded, and the AutoMeter A.F Guage reads rich at idle (only running off passenger side o2 sensor)
The noise does come from the right hand side of the engine. Belt tensioner was replaced when engine installed. Knock sensor has been checked for good contact. (Was told this is known problem to cause ping).
Tis booked into Mike's Dyno on Friday to be analyzed, as he was highly recommended.

But any ideas of what might be causing this would be much appreciated!

did you ask if the engine had previously been run on gas??? could be worn valve stems.....try using a different oil and an additive and see how it goes from there

Just called wreckers, they claim engine has never been run on gas.
Called mechanic (who still has car) oil change was done at installation of engine using Valvoline 20W-40 (not synthetic)
New Plugs when engine fitted - Leads 12 months old and tested ok.:b:

Swap out the DFI module (the circuit board under the coil packs) for a known good one. When I first got the VS, it developed a metallic rattle / plinking and the motor would keep cutting out intermittently (very scary at intersections).

Eventually it died and would not start, we had it towed to my mechanic and the DFI module was pronounced dead (hairline fracture or something in the circuit board tracks). After the DFI module was replaced, there was no more rattle/plinking... All good!

She's been running great ever since then (2 1/2 years).

Hope this helps,
DP
