I've had a clunk in car for a long time. I had the diff changed out recently and diff and trans specialist who did it said there was nothing wrong with the diff when he pulled the back off it. I had a look and couldnt see anything wrong with it either, no broken or chipped teeth on the cogs

So its definitely not the diff.

To try and find out what this xyz ing fault is, I?m looking at putting some microphones under the car to diagnose where the problem is once and for all.

The trouble is, where would I get some suitable microphones from, how do I know what microphones would be suitable for the job and how would I rig them up?

Also how many should I get to do the job? I'm thinking that one or two around the auto trans and one near the uni joint should be enough.

What other gear would I need to make the microphones work, like what do they plug into to give them power??

I'll feel a little odd walking into a music shop and buying microphones for the car but If I have to I will.

Is there anything else I need to consider with this? What have I not thought of here? Any suggestions on how to go about all this?

thanks in advance.

No idea on the sound, but u can buy a battery powered FM transmitter, like what a guest speaker would use at a conference.

You can actually buy a wireless tool for what you are wanting to do
They are called "Electronic Chassis Ears"
It has 4 or 6 wireless transmitters you can attach to the vehicle that communicate with a main receiver unit to help isolate noises
