i am wanting to put a minispool in my vn commo (auto) :( and i heard that vls had 3.45:1 ratio and i wouldnt mind better accelaration and was wondering wether changing ratio would be a big job to do, or if it would be worth doing and would it kick my speedo out much? any advice would be much appreciated

3.45 is a sweet ratio for VN/S Commodores IMO. A tad pokier off the line but still gives good highway revs for a daily driver. Getting the speedo calibrated is easy as 3.45 was a common HSV ratio back in that era too. As for a spool - great for the track, gay as aids for the street.

Yeah it'd hit limitor in first no problem and should grab second, I recommend 3.9's or 4.11's though you lose speed in the long run and wastes a bit more fuel per the higher revs

I really dont think you should lock your diff for the street. You will be going through bushes every 6 months. And it will be a bit hairy in the rain, especially if you plan on going 3.9's or 4.11's.

i know lsd's are expensive to keep replacing, how about this
LOKKA Differential Locker | 4WD Systems | Gear to Goannawhere

they make them to suit a vn diff. and i can vouch for them being a good locker. and their legal

3.45 aint worth it unless got big power get 3.7 with a auto gd combo, as for spools, there fine daily use i run one, but i have a manual so dunno how auto and spool with go as u can't control it as such

To actually change the gears is a bitch of a job and I'd recommend a diff shop doing that.

Yes, rb30 vl's did come with 3.45's... and aren't a bad ratio but to be honest if your diff is going to get ripped apart and acceleration is your main goal then I would recommend going for some 3.9's from an r31 skyline.... You could get 4.11's from a r31 pintara also.. Because its a lot of effort for 3.45's

To fix the speedo is pretty simple, you can just get a speedo correcter kit from jay car and then build it, then wire it in (there should be a guide on how to install it in the how to thread by immortality)

You could also buy a vl turbo diff and install that :) but they are pretty expensive... that will also give you more clearance because they're a shorter diff :)

well your diff at the moment has a 3.08 ratio. if you go 4.11 then thats a 33.5% increase/difference.

so your speedo is going to be reading 33.5% higher than your road speed.
so to do 100 km/h, you will have to have your speedo reading 133. so just find out your revs by that.
I dont know if the vn's had a speed governor. but for example its 180 km/h.
then 180 divided by 1.33 (because you have an extra 33 percent) is 135.
so you will max out at 135 km/h road speed.

and another way to find out what rpm you will be doing at a certain speed is
RPM divided by Current diff ratio Times New diff ratio
so just say at 100km/h your car revs at 1600rpm with your 3.08 diff ratio, and you want to know what your gonna be revving at with your 4.11 ratio
    1600/3.08x4.11 = 2135 rpm
