Ok don't ask me how but while installing a spool in a diff I have managed to mix up the spacer shims wich sit next to the carrier bearings. know one is about half a mm bigger then the other one. Bit of a long shot bit does anyone know wich side takes the bigger shim? If I can't find the answer it looks like it's going to a diff shop because I don't wanna muck around with things like this.

Cheers guys

It all depends how the crown and pinion were machined initially, the shims are there to align it properly. Guess you have a 50/50 chance of getting it right.

If installed incorrectly and the crown and pinion are moved away from each other you'll have excessive backlash.
If they move the crown and pinion to close together it may be hard to turn and they won't be meshed together properly.
If it's wrong it'll most likely whine and wear the crown and pinion out quickly.

there is no set side to which the larger shim goes, it all depends how it was measured and set at the factory, some will have the larger shim on the left and others on the right.

If you don't know how to check how the crown and pinion are meshing then you have the choice of trying it with a 50% chance of getting it right, 50% chance of getting it wrong and possibly causing more damage or take it to a specialist that can set it properly.

Once driven on it set wrong, it will possibly need to be checked out professionally and could need new shims of a different thickness fitted to take into account the extra wear from the stuff up. If the teeth aren't worn beyond a serviceable limit.
