I am just about to do an oil change, i read on another thread that mobil 1 is pretty much the SHITE!!!! what viscosity are people using??????? My owners book suggests 20w 50 however mobil 1 does not come these weights would appreciate others letting me know what viscosity they are using VSII cheers
choosing your engine oil grade is not a hard-set thing. if the book tells you that it would be ideal to run 20w-50, then thats what the R&D guys found to give the best service life...however they will say too that you can use a lower viscosity oil to increase fuel consumption....you say yours is an ecotec, i use castrol magnatec in mine and by memory thats a 15w-30 or something like that...i am getting a pretty good run out of it, but there are that many oils out there it can be hard to choose.....if you like mobil 1, stick with it, i would get the nearest grade under the 20 weight oil....anyone else?
magnatec is 15W/40 id be running a 15W/50 if it was me, its what i run in both my 5L SS and my olds 3.8 ecotec runs beautifully, doesnt leak and hardly uses it at all running an oil called Motul, its what a lot of the jap boys are running in their toys... bout $50 for 5L though, so its pretty pricey
I used to run pennzoil street machine in my old vg ute, it used to last very well, maybe it was a combination of pretty tight motor as well, even at 10,000km service it used to look pretty good....don't know why i am not using it now, just a change of mind i suppose.........
Mobil 1 5W-50 I've been running a VS S2 Ecotech Manual with Mobil 1 5W-50 from new (for just over 150,000 Km now). I have previously used this oil in a VL for about the same Km. I am happy to swear by it, though I am less than happy at the current price. It went up last time to dollar slipped against the US, and has not come back down with the currency reversals. I usually buy it at K-Mart 15% off sales. I haven't rechecked the independent tests of motor oils for a couple of years, but Mobil 1 has always preformed at the top. I am comfortable that their oils are at least equal to anyone else's, based on the fact that they have led the way in developing synthetic oils for aviation gas turbine engines. Mineral oils are not able to make the grade in that environment.
You can get Mobil 1 in 15W50 grade which is what I am using on my 383 Calais. I buy it direct from the Petrogas, the Mobil distributor 44-76 Sim**** Ave, Spotswood - Telephone 1300 363 003. Mobil1 15W50 $161.12 for a box containing 3 x 5l containers.
