The way I read it, I don't know that he's in the industry per se, but he's on the road a LOT. Like I can imagine him doing 4 Brisbane-Sydney-Brisbane trips a week. And he has enough interest in the cars he changes-over all the time that he does a lot of research into what's what, how to do what, etc, and he changes them regularly enough that he actually tries all sorts of stuff in-practice.
But part of the way I read his enthusiasm for certain things automotive is in the same way a frequent business traveller will get a thrill out of getting through security in a way that saves them 45 seconds more than the previous-best.
And I think the reason he rubs people up the wrong way so much is 'cos if there are two ways to do something & they both get the same result for the same price, the way he did it is always the right way & the other way is just stupid. And given the internet doesn’t convey tone very well, I reckon people are misunderestimating his intention, more negatively than intended.

 

Yup he's into viticulture and happens to be a commodore tragic like most of us.

 

Maybe its time he came out of the closet

Problem was , if you disagreed with him , and backed it up with facts and figures, he’d throw his toys out of the cot ,and block you or try to have you infracted , that’s what he tried on with people

 

Ugly Dave would probably just tell a joke about Monstar Dick!
