I was reading another post where somebody paid their auto guy $90 to increase line pressure for harder shifts. Is this overly bad for the auto?

Cheers

Sounds like half a shift kit. It's good for the auto really, because it reduces slip time on clutches when combined with the right springs and servos.

Your auto makes the gear changes smoother, by using say, for example, 2nd and 3rd at the same time, sort of overlapping gears. Reducing the overlap results in a harder shift, and less wear on the box.

Cool, could you please tell me what is entailed in a proper shift kit? What does it generally cost to do?

They cost about $80 to buy outright (less if you shop around), and will cost $400 supplied and fitted to install at most auto shops.

If you're super-handy, you can do it yourself without removing the box.

yip you can turn the shift pressure up easy as to take some of the slow changing due to age out of the box.if you do it early before the box is too worn you can save the box from dieing like so many on here do.under the drivers side rear solinoid is an allen key headed screw turn clockwise no more than 1/8-1/4 or a turn.
