Ahhh, the joys of greasable front ends. Forgotten what they looked like since I started driving Commo's. And have a go at the swaybar - about as thick as a piece of spaghetti.

hey dude, could you check something for me pls? i am missing a bolt (yep, completely missing) fron the top wishbone on the drivers side. will head down to the wreckers later to see if i can 'freebie' one, but i cant make out from the pics whether hq's are the same.

guessing its about 19mm and has a fine thread and a big-arse washer, then a bush then another washer then a big bar that joins the other side. looking at the suspension sideways at the very top there should be two bolts, one in the front and one in the rear, both srewed into the bar.

i just need to know if its the same setup so i dont waste my time driving to the wrecker. cheers mate.

Ahhh sorry, I've been so busy doing other things I havn't seen the thread!

I just pulled my wishbone inside and had a bit of a looksie. My camera is completely busted, so I can't get a photo - but the bolt is 15/16". The wishbone sits on a pivot shaft which appears to be roughly 11.1/2" from end to end. There is a pivot bush on either end, each held in by a large cupped retainer (washer-like) which is 1.11/16" in diameter. The nuts are a 15/16" hex, and 5/8" deep.

    Hope this helps :)

LMAO oh wow, well picked. I didn't even realise :p

Let's all just ignore the stuff in that picture, and assume that what you saw was beer, cigarettes, and maybe a porn mag. Right? :p

    lmao, best explanation ever. ^_^

And that's the story I'm sticking with :p

Dude don't drive it. Thats what holds the top A arm to the chassis, should be some U shaped shims too - thats how camber/castor is adjusted/set

I reckon all franco/metric terms need the :axe: when talking about these old girls that survive - its all imperial man * respect

Nah, the shims and all that sit under the bolts that connect the pivot shaft to the chassis. I think ari was more interested in the bolts that held the pivot shaft to the wishbone if I'm not mistaken :)

sweeet as bro :) tahnks for an awesome reply. yeah it looks like they are exactly the same, brilliant. will hit up a wreckers this w/e.

that bolt missing would explain why that wheel has been rubbing on the castor arm :S

How'd you go with that bolt, ari?

Today was a good day for me. I FINALLY removed the lower wishbone bush that has been frustrating me for weeks. The bolt rusted onto the sleeve that sits inside the pivot bush. As such, I was unable to move the bolt either way in order to remove the control arm.

Today, I attacked it with fire. I used a full 500ml of butane, torching the bush for at LEAST fifteen solid minutes until molten rubber was dripping out of the bushing onto the driveway. After I ran out of butane, the bush continued to burn for another few minutes. I HAVE PICS COMING!! After a bit of digging around in there with an old pick, the entire bush lay in a smoldering heap on the driveway, and I was able to remove the wishbone :p

Now that I have my entire front end out, does anybody have any super-magic tips for removing hard, age-old chunks of grease and road grime from tricky shapes? I mean, apart from scratching away at the wishbones with a pick, is there any super-duper formula people have been able to soak car parts in that just dissolve gunk and make it fall off? :) If not, many long nights of cleaning await, 'cause the local gurney isn't going to cut the mustard here! This is forty years of mustard we're talking about!!

    :carby rebuilt
    :brake calipers being rebuilt
:new wheel cylinders on the way
:new brake lines and flaring/bending kits on the way
:new master cylinder and proportioning valve on the way
:new shocks + bushes + ball joints + all suspenison links waiting to be installed

The front end should be looking fairly schmick soon :)

that, is by far the best story i have ever heard :D i might give it a go if i get desperate, but i dont think im going so far as to pull that stuff out just yet. i am only gonna blow over it with paint.

anyways, the stuff i used is prepsol. but you will have to chip away at it in spots so the rock of crud you are trying to loosen absorbs it better. also kero works pretty well too, we use it in our parts washer. but stinks like hell.

but nothin' compares with a wire wheel attached to the angle grinder *evil grin* 10,000RPMs BABY! i have not found any substance yet that withstand its fury!!!!, but it will f shiss up so ya gonna be careful. oh yeah and wear gloves and goggles cos bits of razor sharp wire go everywhere. got one stuck into my eyelid. which hurt.

looks like you got more done that me. the heat has killed me over the last weeks so have done nothing so far. will get to tht bolt today.

actually, i am gonna go get a bolt right now.. see ya

edit, went to th wrecker to descover that i should have read your post more thoroughly. the chevy has a BOLT, the HQ has a nut :(

ive found kero will remove pretty much anything, if its paticularly difficult soak it over night in kero, also as ari666 has said an angle grinder with a wire wheel, if you need to scrape **** off, ive used an old file ground down to an angle so its the perfect angle for scraping **** of metal parts use that plus kero and a wire brush shouldnt have any worries

Chev, Chev, Chev, Chev :) getting closer every day now :), hard grease doesn't come off as easy as paint when you are sand blasting, it will come off but I'd smash it off a bit fist because sand blasting is costly per hour :)
