I have been told not to use the magnetic oil stuff, cos when a mechanic needs to do work to your motor, it makes it a lot harder...

I use Mobil... I think its XHP Plus, 20W-50 I think..

The car I put it in is a VR Como with 230K on the clock.

I have been using the magnetec but i do believe the best oil you can put in your car is the oil the car manufacturer originally specified. The engine was built with this type of oil as a focus and you will get best results if you use original type. Not sure exactly what is specified for the vr/vs i would have to fetch my repair manual. Prob 20w-50. I am going to switch on my next change. Not that i have had any ill effects using magnetec.

i have been using mangantec in my vs, but switched to a shell one with 15-50, the 10-40 i belive is to thin, i wouldnt go any higher then 15 though.
spend the money and get good oil, or better yet get mobil one for 60. plus all holden mechanics use magnateck anyways

Since My first 5000 service I switched to Mobil1. Even the service dept threw in the Mobil 1 oil cap from the HSVs! SO now 100,000 on Mobil 1. Never seen such clean oil on a dipstick!

I use 15/50 valvoline durablend and highly recommend it to anyone with a well developed v8 that runs roller cam and rockers because the needle roller bearings in these assemblies need a lighter oil for adequate lubrication. In a 304 which has just your low performance pressed steel rockers and basic cam I would use a 20/50 oil, and if ya kane it prefferably penrite 20/60.

The original mechanic of my car recommended Pennzoil 20/50 so going by his word there but thinking of switching to Mobil1 :)

oh yeh the reason i use mobil 1 5w50 is because i need a thin synthetic oil because my engine has just had a rebuild so its still a bit tight :)

Pennzoil 20w-50 Multi Vis is the way to go. Not too expensive and does just as good a job as the Mobil 1's or Magnatec's. Comes highly recommended by my brother who has been a mechanic for 20 years now.
Been using it for 50,000k's and not a problem yet, smooth as ;)

    Magnatech

I use Magnatech with a new filter every 5000ks. Mechanic says the car is still tight as and the best his seen (ecotech V6) i have a few times had the car over 6000rpm and she has never failed? i know that you don't have to change the oil this often but its the cheapest thing youcan do to keep your ride on the road feeling right!

    Mobil Synthetic

I swapped to Mobil 1 5W-50 at the first service on a VS S2 V6 Manual. Will do so with my VY S@ V6 Manual as well.

Buy it at Kmart on 15% off days, or Auto 1 with 20% off dockets.

While the car was getting serviced by the dealer, there was no cost penalty as they charged the same amount for mineral oil.

Having been an aviation engineer with responsibility in lubrication, among other things, I will only use fully synthetic oil.

There were times I bought it in the US. Saw it last year at USD$3.50 per US quart, which at the current exchange rate works out to less than AUD$25 for 5 litres. It went up last time the currency dropped, and stayed there when the AUD recovered.

Big profits for Mobil, but I'll still use it.

Been using Castrol GTX2 Since I've had it and I've put 210,000k's on it personally. 370,000k's done in total. Can't argue with that.

Yeah I have swapped between GTX2 and Shell helix (5k intervals) and I'm at 230k now. Of course I wouldn't expect any problems with the V6 with regular oil changes until waaay over 300k.

What interval you change oil and is it on gas?

Clacks, usually change the oil about 7000k's or so. The car is at the stage where it's starting to use a fair bit of oil and i'm frequently toping it up. So by the time it's due for a service the oil isn't that bad. Other than using oil the engine runs perfect! Seriously it runs better than a lot of cars with less than half the k's on them that mine has!
