Hi All, Im wanting to move my alternator, from the top posi on my V6.. apart from removing my A/C, and relocating it there, is there any other spot it could be placed? more than likely i'll be needing a fabbed bracket, but im clueless as to where it can be moved to.. any help will be muchly appreciated!! Cheers
sircruise.. fingers crossed gonna try and get one fabbed up, got all the measurements n stuff, and know of a mate that does aluminium welding so i should be able to cut up a standard manifold and get some aluminium pipes n get it started! hence my movin the big ba$tard of an alternator.. i've heard that the suzuki's alts are half the size and are rated at 100amps.. something i may have to consider, coz i dont wanna loose the A/C, and i really cant see anywhere else to relocate it..
yeah i dont know where you'd put it! lol with that walker one above you have to move the alternator and the coil packs for it to fit. which is why they dont make them anymore....too much to make and too much stuffing around to fit it, having to move all that stuff.
yea its a shame thou, look at that masterpiece!!! thats damn horny i've read in other threads that they've had tailshaft mounted alts n stuff.. good if ur always on the road, but not good for stop start traffic.. may have to do a lil more research into maybe getting a smaller alt.. coil packs can be moved without a hitch, neatens the bay up a lil too.. and a chance to get a set of MSD coils.. with the belts that ppl get for s/c's are they a standard larger belt? or a custom belt, with trial n error fitting? could weld 2 pulleys together and have a seperate belt to drive the alt.. anyone with more ideas? nice lil stumper i have asked hey!!
im sure for the factory L67 engine there would be the extended serpintine belt to run the M90, whether thats going to help you i dunno. i think i also heard somewhere that castlemaine hot rod shop does custom belts to any length. that said, stuffed if i know where you can re-locate the alternator....there's just not really anywhere for it (that i can think of).
OK, i've had a good hard think, and looking about my engine bay.. and i had a thought.. (yea it hurt!) anywho what im thinking is removing one of the pulleys, one of the ones that wear out often, and turning the alt around so the rear faces the radiator, and placing the alt pulley in its place.. ok now what im wondering is, apart from a bit of loss of airflow.. i'd have to get a bracket made up running off one of the side rails, but would i have anything else to worry about? i know the alt has to spin the right way.. enough room left so i could replace the belt if it broke.. i can relocate the coilpacks to the firewall.. would all this need engineering? Cheers guys
today i picked up an inlet manifold and a set of heads for $150.. the heads, i got so i could grab some measurements from it, maybe do some matched porting as well, and the inlet manifold is for the project.. i'll post up some pics tomorrow of the inlet man n heads, nothing flash but its a start Thanks to Greenfoam for the help on runner length and dia, he is a wizz with it all!! looking forward to hearing from u soon mate! Going to have a chat to the welder saturday and go over a few things see how hard its gonna be if he can do it.. will keep you all updated as things progress.. The main thing while this is happening is sorting out the bracket for the alt.. coz when the manifold is done, i wanna bolt it up asap
i've seen a few pics of alts moved to near the diff, i don't know how hard it would be but i probly wouldn't b much harder than moving it around in the engine bay. Matt
ive seen pulleys put in the rear of tail shafts and the altenator ran of the tail shaft. only charges when your driving. not sitting at idle.
yea, the tail shaft mounted alt, is good if your mainly hwy driving, but i do a fair bit round town, stop start stuff.. be sure to check back soon, i'll have progress reports n pics cant find my camera atm so cant give you inlet and head pics, but most of you know what they look like any comments or helpful hints you think will help, dont be afraid to post up Cheers
well not much of an update, i've given the manifold to my mate, and he has the pic of the custom joby.. hes goin to make it out of wood first and then cast it, but has been flat out atm, plus a few more tweaks with the measurements before i hand them over this weekend.. really wish i could weld half decent! or had a heap of cash to throw at a welder n say, here build this! =)
decided on a alternator setup yet? with my manifold, ive got the alternator sitting beside the passenger side head. im still looking for a tensioner to weld to old alternator bracket though, as the original tensioner is gone.
Can you post up a pic of ur alt setup? jus so i can get a bit of an idea.. bout the alt setup, was goin to spin the alt around so the rear end points to the radiator, and the alt pulley will replace one of the idler pulleys.. it should fit between the motor and the radiator.. goin to get a custom bracket made up coming off the side rail.. thoughts?
yeap the chasis rail, jus below where u've placed ur alt that was a location where i was thinking of moving it, but i dont think it will sit low enough for the plenums.. but thanks for the pic and the quick response very much appriciated guessing its not on the road yet? if so, have u noticed a difference?
