lol, everything. struggling with finances ATM, work is slow so money is slow. gotta refit this garage too so need cash for that. the main thing is a compressor, but benches are really important too, so once a have a bit of liquid cash (hopefully next week) will be ringing bunnings and getting them to deliver their finest MDF, floor joice and bolts. then i can start finding homes for all the tools and bring them back from work. car wise: front end has to come back off guards need to be bogged and finished drivers door needs a teensie alignment, roughly 0.5mm to get the gap right. the two rear 1/4's need to be attacked with paint stripper, then the bottoms cut out with a vengence, patches fabricated and re welded, bog bog and more bog. buy a replacement boot and fit. more bog on the boot seal area to get the gaps right, gonna re-do the drivers side of the roof cos it looks crap, the doors need to have the locking actuators fitted and wired. the 2nd and most important part of the alarm immobiliser needs to be hooked up, stoneguard the rest of the floor (underneath) run relays for the brake lights cos' i dont like how there are 6x 21W globes all running through a pissy wire from the indicator stalk, boot panels need to be carpeted and fitted. amps mounted, the whole car needs to be lowered 2 inches all round, tyres need to be purchased and fitted, the whole car prepped and painted it makes me sad. so i have tried not to think about it. next weekend i should hopefully get enough cash to afford a compressor if i dont spent all my money on partys
stupid vkjonno, i was doing really well not thinking about this car. was tucked away safely in the garage. nothing to do.... then he gets me thinking about it again conversation with the missus went something like "hey babe, how much would you hate me if i spent all my rent money on a compressor and you had to cover my portion?" turns out she wouldnt hate me, so thats good. so i listened to all the advice in the thread i started about compressors, and the one thing that stood out was "get the biggest compressor you can afford" but what no one mentioned in there was a REALLY important detail about compressors. a detail so important, anyone who is looking for a compressor should think long and hard about. 15A it sucks cos' all the good 3HP and above compressors all run on 15A's which is fine, as the boys from paint mobile said "just file off the plug and put a 20A fuse in.......... WTF?!?!? and set fire to my house>? awesome. seriously. it'd cost a good $1K to get 15A cables installed in the garage, and im in a rental, so really its not gonna happen. so this was the biggest compressor i could afford, simply cos anything bigger meant a 1k electricians bill and i couldnt justify that. also did a bit of rubbing yesterday: that is about the standard the whole car will be. not perfect, not great, but good enough. edit* lol, you can still see some of the party carnage on the garage floor
meh id file back the plug as long as the house has a safety switch you'll be right ive run plenty of 15amp welders including my own tig on 10 amp socket
yeah i could do. im having money troubles atm, and i think i know what he will say already "its gonna be really expensive and take a really long time" which is what everyone else has said so far. i need to get a bit more done on it b4 i go getting anymore quotes i think.
need options here, this car is doing my head in: so if you read this thread, then you know roughly what stage the body work is at. i just rubbed down the rear door and it looks pretty good. good enough to spray. but because i have rubbed it back, obviously there are a couple of spots where i have gone through to the metal so i need to paint this thing asap to avoid any surface rust. i have a few options. 1. paint panel by panel in green/clear. will it really look that bad? 2. paint it just with green, no clear (will it seal? my thoughts are the base coat is slightly porus) 3. paint it just with the red ocher primer and pray that it doesnt rain if i ever take it out. 4. paint it matte balck (how hard would it be to undo this later on?) 5. paint another coat of putty on it (which seals unless its rubbed back) which means i have wasted my time. i have a fair bit of time on my hands at the moment and want to do as much as possible on this while i can, the goal would be to get this girl reg'd and rwc so that the next time i drive around to panel shops they dont all freak out and either refuse to do it or quote me 10 grand. i would LOVE to do this as a show car, but sadly its going to be driven, its going to have little accidents and the quality of work so far means that this is just going to be an "as good as it gets" kinda job.
Hmmmm..... Soo many options If the green base coat does seal it alright by itself (which I'm not 100% sure it will, but hopefully is?!). Then I'd go with option 2. until you've got all the panels prep'd and basecoat'd and then go over it all again with a light coat or two to get it all spot on the same? (flakes laying down, mixtures etc) Shouldn't you (etch +) prime bare metal spots anyway lol Or, if it doesn't seal, then I'd thow a primer over it - if you're using a spray putty/primer in one, just thin it down to the max. on the can (so you can use it just for a primer with little filling ability) then put a couple of light coats on, mist it in fine, and it should stay pretty flat = less sanding/blocking flat when its all ready to go. (If you use it thicker like a putty, I've found, that it can get a bit peely = more blocking flat, might just be my shitty spraying tho..) If you spray over a black base coat its always going to be a (tiny bit) different shade, being metallic it can be a bit transparent, but if you put enough on, it'l eventually cover I like red ochre primer too, but the chances are it will see some rain before it gets completed? You can (sometimes) get away with spraying one panel at a time, but you just have to be spot on with the spraying technique, pressures and mixtures, and even the days you spray on, humidity, temp etc... For me (being a beginner) it's just one more thing 'that could go wrong' so I try and avoid doing it this way. I've never done it this way, nor heard of anyone having a patchy looking car because they did it this way, but I'd be devo'd if my car came up looking poor because of it. Well, I'm not sure if any of that helped you ari, but hopefully it didn't totally waste your time reading it either. All my advice should only be listened to once someone else agree's with me, (or dis-agree's) cause I'm in about the same boat as you anyway, with my spraying ability, or lack of Keep us updated!!!
thanks bro, pretty much what you are saying is what is tumbling around in my brain right now. this car is doing my head in so badly, thinking seriously of throwing it on ebay and seeing what i get anyways, it is still a source of entertainment on days off. i love paint stripper: attempting bog again: didnt turn out tooooo bad: this is what i wasted yesterday and this morning on though, couple of coats of clear on an evo 8 spolier. the crap from factory always flakes off so for a quick buck i sand it all back and reapply. this one has been the best finish of all of the ones i have done, but there are still loads of 'sink holes' where the clear just sucks down into the void:
Just satin black the car for now IMO. All you will have to do at a later date is rub it back and paint over it (you might even like it in satin black ) Also, for the record, primer does NOT seal. Primer is porous, it takes on water if not painted over.
yeah satin black is a big winner so far, but am just worried about 2 things 1. the price, and how much of a waste of money it will be. 2. how hard will it be to get rid of later, and yes i most probably will frikken LOVE it, the car ultimatly needs to be green.
still gonna have a white roof though edit* maybe stick a "serve and protect" sticker on the side and a big badge?
Or not? Satin black with a white roof would probably look OK, needs to be dropped with some big rubber on the back though....
dropped and big rubber are on the way anyway.... dont get all excited though, im looking for a means to an ends. how much work would it be to rub all the black crap off later?
No big deal, just don't put heaps of black on, just enough to cover it and get it uniform. Anyway, the black will serve as a guide coat when you do decide to paint it
.............im sorry and thats the same compressor as mine i believe its awsome man. but our water trap on it was faulty!! but its ok cos we got a deal on some aftermarket ones
Thought the exact same thing, except for the badge. Paint it black ari. And white-walls, big thick white walls. On neon green stockies.
