So it's pretty easy to change the oil? I still haven't tried it yet!

I've got a VXII ecotec and the car has hit 10,000km since the last service - but I can't book it in for two weeks and I will probably drive another 1,500km's... all highway country km's though.

(From melbourne to bendigo, to benalla etc).

I've checked the oil and it's sitting exactly half way between the full and low mark, and it's still a honey colour... it almost looks new, if it was at the full mark anyway! I always use Magnatec these days.

Do I really, really need to change it, or can I just top it up?

I don't want to waste $30-$40 dollars on oil when it'll be changed again in a few weeks anyway...
just drive it should be fine...my old vt always ran at least 1000km over service periods using mineral oil without a problem...
if you want piece of mind top it up with about 500ml-750ml and enjoy your trip

My sentiments exactly about Valiants...my dream is still however to have a VH Charger with an Alloytec and auto... :yeah:

Interesting that an Ecotec takes so much oil...ours is still on a warrantee so I can't do my own oil changes yet, and I had no idea they held so much.

It used to be standard wisdom to fit an enlarged or modified sump to an engine to hold up to five liters of oil instead of around 3.5 to 4 liters....so at least modern cars are there already.

PMSL, you wanna take out the Valient motor that had a six that can run 14.4 down the quarter and put the alloytec? Oh well each to their own.
I'd personally want a E49 or mock up and I'd probably work the steering as they weren't very good when required to turn.
