My girlfriend has a VP 1992 thats done 196,000.

Lately she has been getting a problem with her speedo, at random times, just dropping from 60kmph to zero and doesnt register. This as i said happens at random times and then kicks back in at random times unless you turn off the car and start it again.

The more worrying thing is, when the speedo dies, a few seconds after that the car starts chuggin funny and goes to stall when she brakes at corners and at lights. Its not a spluttering from the engine but more of a shuddering caused by the transmission not changing gears properly I think.

Its getting worse as she keeps driving it, happens more regularly for longer periods and she doesnt thrash her car, cares for it like her baby.

I was wondering if anyone here has any idea if its just a sensor messing up the computer or something? If its easy to fix/diagnose the problem? and Hopefully a ballpark cost figure?

Its fairly urgent because if this is unfixable or costs too much we are going to sell it off and try get another car. :ranting: :rip:

Any comments greatly appreciated. Thanks guys. :w00t:

Lack of speed sensor signal to the ECM will cause the stall. Most likely culprit will be the speed sensor itself - located on the back of the transmission but it might be other things such as wiring, speedometer, ECM.

Agree with cheap6, sounds like the speed sensor is on its way out.

About 20 mins labour to fit a speed sensor, 19.5 of which will be talking to you/girlfriend, putting car on hoist and 30 seconds fitting. That is, of course, without any diagnosis time. Cost of part: ?????
