With only a limited time before the rain started again I went with the more important job of sorting the leaking oil cooler. I'd already bought a new gasket and a blank plate if the issue couldn't be resolved.
I drained the oil and removed the filter to allow better access. Thankfully it was just a loose AN10 fitting on the adaptor, I tightened everything up and refilled with oil and a new filter. In the summer I'm planning on pulling the front subframe and tidying it up as it's a bit rusty.

Also a little bonus, I was initially unsure on whether running an oil cooler was necessary with the UK climate but while following the cooler pipework I found one of these.

Excuse the horrendous picture.

Once I'd refilled the oil I tested the thermostat to make sure it's still opening and closing at the correct temperature. At least that relieves a bit of a worry of the oil being over cooled.
Also, yeah it needs a wash.

I was hoping to fit the oil temperature sensor and gauge, but the adaptor block with the 1/8npt fitting is American and I don't have an Allen key in 9/64"? I don't know it's not 4mm it's not 5mm and not even 4.5mm although it did fit better didn't want to risk damaging it.

Still looks good when dirty. Shame about your weather and salted (?) roads. I hope the tin-ants don't get into the bodywork.
Good move by the place who sold your oil to place a bar sticker over the grade (5w?0)

Thankfully it's been very well under coated. As for the oil, the label placement it's absolutely terrible.

At least the sticker has the grade on it.

A little package arrived today.

The original had been previously super glued (badly) back together.

The part number is different as it's a vauxhall/Opel omega part but they are identical and the new one only cost £20 or ~$39.

Interesting, an oil cooler in much cooler climate than it's normal environment.
